>Tulip mania wasn't even tulip mania
>Nobody was actually financially ruined by it
>There was an expanding middle class able to afford luxuries like expensive flowers for the first time
>There was a speculative bubble around these new luxuries, but nothing that was actually that drastic
>Nobody except wealthy merchants who could afford to splurge actually paid vast sums for tulip bulbs
>The Dutch created elaborate satire about it after the bubble burst
>This got culturally misunderstood by the English
>They perpetuated the myth of tulip mania
>Everyone now thinks that tulip mania was a real thing and talk about it every time there is a boom-bust cycle
How do so many educated people seem to get things so wrong?

If me and my friends became self-proclaimed experts and I got them to approve my obviously bullshit opinion would you blindly follow that?
I get it you think an expert's viewpoint has a higher chance of being correct than some average guy, but the odds are not 100-0.
Pretending that they are is akin to a child always treating what their parents say as a fact, no matter what they hear from other sources.
It shouldn't be the expert's job to sift through misinformation, it should be yours. Read multiple sources, even if they contradict eachother, and if you consider yourself somewhat intelligent you should be able to tell which side has more truth to it instead of waiting for the experts to puke the information into your mouth like you're a baby bird.

Yeah that's because Socrates in Plato's Republic was right, the truth is whatever is beneficial to society and it is the job of the leaders(philosophers) to tell whatever little lies are necessary to ensure justice for all.

Kek, my college actually had someone professor from St. Johns come and sit in on one of our Great Books classes once. Although, we didn't read the full list posted. I spent an entire semester reading Victor Hugo's works poetry, Notre Dame de Paris, and Les Miserables. My professor was actually the French language professor too, so she was really into it. Very fun class. Probably not the most useful in the grand scheme of things, but still enjoyable.
