I'm up 9% YTD by just buying 800-900 dollars worth of blue chips on the dip with the money leftover after my bills are paid and after I've put 15% of my paycheck into my 401k and 5% into a high yield savings account . I'm long XOM, AAPL, CVS, INTC, list goes on. All blue chippies that were low when I had a few hundred bucks to spare. Obviously it's been less profitable than some traders, but there's a lot of reasonable strategies out there in a good market. I buy things I don't plan to sell for over 10 years. If the market tanks, the companies I'm in are solid enough to outlast and I'll have nice low basis dividend reinvestments. Not counting my retirement accounts, I'm only sitting on a portfolio of about 12,000 dollars in taxable accounts. It wouldn't be a suicide moment if I lost it all. Always have 25k in savings account to take advantage of a potential crisis and as emergency fund.

Of course it's less than inflation, but not by much. Show me any vanguard fund that can significantly beat that yield without a risk of 5+% drawdown and without the risk of getting destroyed by rising rates. You find me that and I'll dump 10 grand into it tomorrow. Not even trying to be a dick, I just don't think that any such investment product exists and I have done a lot of research. Closest thing in terms of yield and risk aversion I have found would probably be an ETF such as SLQD but that barely beats my savings account and isn't worth the risk for 50 basis points spread on FDIC insurance.

I got mine through a prepaid card called insight. The card comes with a FDIC 5% APY savings account. The drawback is that it only pays out interest quarterly and you can only have $5000 a card. (but you can have two cards). There's also an inactivity fee if you don't touch it for 90 days..I just do a transfer every two months to avoid that.

It comes with a routing/account number that you can use to push money towards it from your main bank account.
