thanks for the discussion. again, remember i don't really know what i'm talking about here - mostly guesswork.

1) pretty sure rates are not guaranteed yearly renewable, so they can just increase them for the older people no?
2) imo more likely that they will just fire people (cutting core benefits and pay extremely unlikely). i would assume when looking at your workforce, most who have employer sponsored plans are really going to prioritize their health coverage. so you'll need to offer a good deal if you want to attract/retain talent.
3) i know there is a lot of focus on what "poorer people" are going to do. to be honest, i highly doubt that they are real areas of profit for health insurers and basically run it to curry favor with the govt.
4) additionally, for those that lose their jobs or downgrade their plan - know that it's likely that the insurer is probably going to charge them equivalent (if not higher) rates since group pricing sees extremely large discounts due to bundling, loss-leading and other actuarial math bonuses.

agree about there being a lot of risks (regulatory and employment level) - but if there is a reward, it's worth considering...

>so they can just increase them for the older people no?
Yes, but boomers control congress - almost all campaign funding comes either from boomers directly or their decisions on who their companies should back. If health insurers try to raise the price on boomers too quickly they will scream at congress to pass some kind of anti-scalping law that passes the cost on to millennials and zoomers.
2 - it depends, a lot of companies right now have make work positions they made up to fill with diversity hires for ESG points, if they start shitting the bed those positions will get laid off, but for smaller companies that don't rely on ESG they may be in a position where either they cut benefits or end up short staffed. In an expansionary environment where the economy is hot they would need to compete, but if we are heading into a recession there will be less job mobility and people are more likely to just stick it out with worse perks than try entering a gutted job market.
3 & 4 - I'm not sure what the breakdown is for these companies for individual vs corporate plans (both in cost and % of portfolio) so you could be right.

think the important thing to note as well for 2, at least from my end, is that insurance is purely a premiums received (cash in) -> claims paid (cash out) game. so even if a shit ton of people get fired or lose coverage - they could still fudge the numbers and collect more than they expect to pay out.

and my gut feeling is basically, yes - these companies will be able to upcharge and get away with it.

Honestly I dont care if I lose everything. Theres too many "investments" these days. We need to revert to simpler times, an investment free society. Maybe knock out that fancy stuff like interest on bank accounts or other shit. Too much money, integer overflows you know what I mean? Dante puts the usurers in the lowest sub-circle of the seventh circle of hell, with others whose sins are regarded as doing violence against nature and nature's God; many people have noted that usurers are placed deeper into hell than violent murderers, violent suicides, blasphemers, and sodomites. Dante regards usurers as perverting art, i.e., productive skill, by means of which we are supposed to produce and create and thereby imitate the goodness of God. Usury is the anti-art: it produces nothing substantial, being just a set of multiplication games with money, and therefore does not really contribute anything to 'earning one's way and furthering humankind'. It merely gives the illusion of doing so, and is therefore a sort of mockery of both human reason and divine providence -- indeed, a sort of universal violence against neighbor, God, and one's own reason, an extraordinarily efficient form of violence by which you do the most damage with the least effort.

But many of the greatest technological innovations of the internet age are free. Search engines, e-mail, GPS, even Facebook — the official economic statistics are not designed to capture the benefits they generate for businesses and consumers.

I already digging a hole this year, doing an entire underground complex below my property and the neighbors. They'll never know. money supply is fixed.
but the increased velocity creates the illusion that there is more money in the system since transactions are 2x fast.
so then this would show up as increased productivity or whatever in 2x GDP, right?
so you need some kind of relationship.

That aside, if I’m understanding you right, you’re asking why even look at GDP data when you can just look at the change between like M3 and M2 to get a better picture of the economy? The movement from other assets into cash? It’s because, as you said, this cash just sits on a balance sheet doing nothing, it does not give you a good picture of inflation and real economic volume in the economy. M2 skyrocketed the past decade yet commodity prices went down, because the monetary supply alone tells you nothing about economic activity.

But the increased velocity creates the illusion there is more money in the system since the transactions are x2 as fast
Yes, more or less this is correct. It’s not an illusion though, think of it like this, if we put a tax on all land or stocks each quarter and say that tax goes to Americans to pay credit cards, every quarter Americans fully pay off their credit cards with this tax and then spend them again. No new money was created, but economic activity increased x4. So GDP is 400% over 100% change in money supply, monetary velocity goes up 400% Its a lot like fractional reserve banking.

>so you need some kind of relationship.
but for which variable do you substitute the relationship for inflation? is it money supply?
Not sure I understand this question fully, you might have to rephrase. Are you asking if increased monetary velocity creates inflation, then how you can control it, through money supply or GDP? If so, I would so the answer is it is more even. You can either raise taxes or put tariffs ect to tank gdp and lower inflation, or you can restrict the monetary supply. The fed can’t make laws or taxes, so they can only control inflation through the monetary supply

Minneapolis police said officers found the body of a man in a building burned down during the protests over the death of George Floyd in May.

"We are treating this death as a homicide," police spokesman John Elder told CNN.
On Monday morning, officials from Minneapolis Police and Fire Departments along with agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives went to a building on East Lake Street based on an anonymous tip, Elder said.
Officials searched the burned rubble where Max It Pawn once stood and found a "deceased individual," Elder said.

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera on Friday fined his defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio, $100,000 for calling the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol a “dust-up” and referring to the racial justice protests of 2020 as a “summer of riots.”
“A group of citizens attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election, and as a result, lives were lost and the Capitol building was damaged. Coach Del Rio did apologize for his comments on Wednesday and he understands the distinction between the events of that dark day and peaceful protests, which are a hallmark of our democracy.”

That’s actually a good way to look at it. I would say that high velocity money is economically productive money though, it is desirable to have high velocity as it means you have a very economically productive nation. Low velocity money is economically unproductive money, long term investing is over ruling actual productive economic activity

>yeah, i wasn't quite clear. basically i was wondering what the magic equation for inflation was. kek
Growth and money supply my man. The money supply could increase 300%, but if growth /GDP is also up 300% there’s no inflation. Inflation happens when you borrowed money to produce growth, and then failed to produce growth.
