Miners aren't needed. An actual currency gets its value from usage and BTC isn't usable for 99% of transactions. Keeping the network running would be done by major holders of that crypto and they would profit through lending out their own reserves when the volume and demand increase

anon, where do you think the money comes from for miners to cover costs? they have to sell bitcoin for dollars. there's an imaginary scenario where retailers take bitcoin for electricity and bulk hardware but that doesn't exist in reality. there is millions of dollars of sell pressure every day from miners just covering their costs, the income from fees doesn't cover it, nowhere close. the bitcoin network isn't going to be net profitable unless it has many times the volume it currently has
