Our CEO, over the last year has been very vocal and transparent about how we are developing ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) and EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion) standards. He's always talking about how at industry conferences this is a huge topic of conversation with other CEO's and that every other competitor is doing the same.

Now unsuprisingly, because we are an engineering company, our employees are predominantely men. One of the 'equity' and 'diversity' goals we have is to therefore hire more women, and promote more women to senior management. The only problem is that to do and manage our work you need to:

a.) have an engineering degree
b.) be very experienced.

The pool of experienced female engineers in our field is extremely low (I would peg it at less than 10%). The proportion of upcoming female engineers in schools is higher, but still low (25%). We work on projects that have extremely high consequences if we fuck up. The general public and environment is at great risk if we fuck up. Therefore, the only safe way for our company to safely increase the proportion of female staff is hire lots of new grads that are female, train them, promote them, and hope they dont leave. The existing predominantly male senior management isnt going to demote themselves. What this ultimately means is that if you are a young man, looking to get started in our industry, you are at a strong disadvantage.

Im not a butthurt incel either. I'm set for life and two of the engineers I most respect at the company is are women. However, this culture of promoting and hiring on gender or race rather than merit will have societal wide consequences. In the investigation of the mount polley mine disaster it was concluded that the relatively young female engineer managing the project was too inexperienced for the role, which directly led to the disaster. Before this her company no doubt used her as a marketing statistic to brag about how many women they hired and promoted.

Why is this being done then? what about 'go woke go broke'? It's because our clients; governments and large publically listed companies are outright requiring it. If you dont tick off all the ESG and EDI boxes you dont win bids. It's actually the opposite, if you arent woke you go broke.

Why are companies requiring it? because their owners, Vanguard and Blackrock, require it.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Yes you are correct. Engineer from Germany here. If you are a white male you are fucked. Mire competition for fewer positions. Open discrimination. Witnessed it myself many times. And it’s getting worse.

i work in corporate accounting. today i was supposed to interview a negress with 1 year of experience for a job that requires 3-5 years of experience. she had a dozen typos on her 3 page resume (wtf.) luckily my boss said, at the last minute, that he thinks she will be a "better fit" for another job opening on another team.

Graduate next year with an engineering degree. I'm fucked. I get turned down for every internship I apply to, and when I did get into one, it was cancelled due to COVID shit. It's so fucking over. Fuck this.

As a professional investor, I welcome the ESG movement. I only invest in companies with a strong ESG rating to keep our planet alive. Do something for future generations instead of acting like a little incel bitch (not particularly directed at OP but whoever keeps criticising ESG).
Women are incompetent? Well, yeah because we live in a patriarchy who keeps women down. In time they will become competent for as long as governments keep promoting more gender diversity in different sectors.
