I pay $1,825 for a tiny studio in a nice part of town, and I got a pandemic deal (the apartment normally goes for $3,000 a month).
The building is shit, it smells horrible, and because there's no noise insulation, you can hear literally anything such as annoying faggot pajeet neighbors who stomp loudly and whistle indoors.
I hate it here, but I'm stuck due to my job, but that might change soon.

I come from a shitty, poor family, no education and seemingly no future. I moved to the big city to make it on my own, and spent my career doing low-paying jobs for various tech companies, but just last year I caught lightning in a bottle and landed a wonderful salaried position for a huge company (fintech). A few months after I got started, I fucked up something with my project and missed a deadline, so I was put on probation. Luckily I recovered, got to keep my job, and got put back on good terms with my management, hence I'm still here and doing fine.
I don't want to give it up because it took me so long to find this position.

I recently lived in an apartment in Queens with 3 roommates and was paying $725 a month. 5 minute walk to the subway, 30 minutes total to midtown Manhattan. It wasn't an ideal living situation, one bathroom and just a shared kitchen and table. No living room or anything, and my room was very small. But it was definitely a good value for NYC, and my roommates were all decent people who kept to themselves. Moved out recently to move back in with my parents because I quit my job to start law school, otherwise would have stayed.

I would really have loved a place of my own but it's impossible to even get a crummy studio in a bad neighborhood for less than $1600. Just ridiculous. The cost of housing is really one of the biggest downsides about living here. It is still worth it for me though because I really love live theater, and was going to over 100 plays a year. Can't really do that anywhere but NYC.
