He abandoned or more likely was forced out of Urbit

he has spoken many times about the fact that hes not a good ceo, which makes sense, generally creative types like him (some would call them elves, perhaps dark elves even) are not good at running an organization after its already established. theres no reason to believe he left these reasons you guys mentioned when he has said otherwise himself

ok? not being the CEO doesn't mean you need to suddenly leave the organization. he could have been a highly senior engineer or technical advisor and kept his galaxies. instead he resigned from the company entirely and promised not ever to talk publicly about urbit. hmm really makes you think.

it's not a blockchain, however there is a team building an eth competitor on top of urbit called uqbar (see the uqbar clearpaper for more https://uqbar-network.gitbook.io/docs/uqbar-clearpaper/uqbar-clearpaper/generalizable-zk-verification-with-urbit))
at one level you can think of it as sort of like a social network
at another, it's an operating system + identity system
is it like bitcoin in 2008? i really can't say. i go back and forth between feeling like a retard and not for owning stars.
somewhat shockingly their price hasn't dropped below where i purchased them, despite crypto being in the toilet

Urbit is more like NFTs or ENS domains than a crypto, think of it more like the fediverse, or metaverse.
The system is comprised of digital properties - planets, stars, & galaxies.
Planets act as a virtual server, log in from anywhere, access your files, bitcoin wallet, talk to other users (planets), etc.
Stars act like service providers for the planets, providing software updates and routing communications between planets. This gives the benefit of planets (users) not having to rely on a central service provider like Twitter or AWS. Instead, users can opt to move from one of the 65535 stars to another at any time. In exchange, stars have the ability to mint 65535 planets under their control, sell them, or exact service fees if they wish.
There's also 255 galaxies which act as service providers for the stars under their control.

In short - digital feudalism + the right of exit from one star to another.
