in my opinion, luxury goods are difficult to invest in successfully. the wealthy are not hugely affected by recessions, so theoretically it should be easier as you do not have to "time" markets that don't really have protracted pullbacks.
but the problem is understanding what premium to pay for equities. they are very difficult to value. the whims of the consumers in these markets can change on a dime, and typically for reasons you will have no way of foreseeing. they are an insular yet loosely-interconnected network of word-of-mouth shoppers.
a tv show writer/producer might seemingly randomly choose to use a porsche or ferrari, or a handbag, or a watch, to give one of its characters some particular quirk by association, and if this character is more identifiable with the middle class, the wealthy will drop that item like a hot potato. this will hit your bottom line and you won't know when the brand will come up with new ideas, to recover.
and when these brands merge, they aren't doing it for economies of scale, and they risk again associating a lesser brand with one for the very wealthy, which can harm your investment. the owners and head designers are typically already independently wealthy and have no interest in answering to shareholders.
and it's not like you're going to succeed in direct sales. the chinese have you beat on fake watches, they've got some 40 years of experience in it. real watches aren't accessible to you; nobody will sell you the inventory. you're just not going to have a good time. you'll buy and have to hold for decades and will only see meager returns. the stocks of luxury goods are themselves luxury goods, complete with huge depreciation, and only there for you to flaunt wealth, which in this case, is wealth you don't have.
