Dividend stocks like I mentioned would probably be the best way to start. It takes decades to buy and hold long enough to build up a lot of profit, but that is all you have to do is buy and hold. Since you are 18 that is the perfect age for starting a dividend portfolio because it should be ready by the time you are thinking to stop working and big corporations that pay good dividends are more likely to survive economic downturns along the way so your portfolio would be less likely to get wiped out.

If you want to do something like day trading I would suggest that you watch and learn about the markets for a few years before trying that. But creating a dividend portfolio should only take a few weeks of study and you can then get started yourself by creating a etrade account or something.

Always do your research before making a stock purchase and while I'm not a financial adviser I would personally only buy stocks in companies that produce tangible goods like fuel, metals, food, machinery ect. Invest in the things that people NEED and will always be there specifically because people need them.

Also, never panic sell because wealth takes time to build and line go up and down everyday.

Typically no less than 10 years but it works best to let a dividend portfolio build up until retirement. Its not a get rich quick plan but a slow and steady type of thing you gradually add shares into. Pic related is a chart of the value of 3M going back to 1985. Notice the slow but steady growth in value, that is what you want. Whoever bought a large position of 3M in 1985 is doing pretty well right now. Since you are 18 investing for the long term is the kind of timeframe you should consider focusing on. If you want to try and get rich quick you are free to carefully make other trades over the short term on the side after doing your research but steady gradual wealth generation should be your main focus.

Again though, I'm not a financial advisor so be sure to talk to other people and get their perspective as well.

Also, if you decide to build a dividend stock portfolio on a platform like etrade or something then be sure to set it up with "dividend reinvestment". That way etrade will automatically take, say, your XOM dividends and automatically reinvest those dividends into more XOM stock. This allows you to grow your positions automatically, the more stock you have the more dividends you get, the more dividends you get the more stock you get which then creates more dividends that get you more stock so on and so forth. After a decade or so you can get rid of the auto reinvest if your position is big enough and just start putting the dividends into your bank account and live off of those dividends without selling any of your stock if you are smart. Bear in mind though you need a pretty big position to live off dividends so start the process now and be ready to wait a while.

Also, invest in companies that will survive a financial crisis because we are likely close to one. For example, Raytheon, Boeing, Conagra, and U.S. Steel probably won't go away until America itself is destroyed.
