new hampshire seems like it has a lot of good RE, large amounts of land that's relatively cheap, everyone says property taxes are a bitch but compared to southern ontario where cookie cutter suburb houses are 750k and anything with than an acre is at least over a million dollars, it doesn't seem that bad.

if I lived in the US and could work remotely that's the kind of place I'd live, no salary tax, no sales tax, only 5% tax on dividend/interest income, and overall RE cost less than half of what it would be for something comparable where I live here even including the higher property tax.
Maybe not ideal for retiring but while working it seems like a dream way to accumulate wealth.

Because there are generally limited economic opportunities in places that are that cheap. Davenport, IA:

Its largest employer is weapons manufacturing at rock island armory, followed by John Deere's assembly plant, and the local hospital system. That's it. Now that may seem really good, but those "manufacturing jobs" are in pure assembly. Those are not white collar wagies doing design, R&D, or any high value-add work. They are running machines serviced by out of towners and designed and built by them, in the service of investors that do not live in the state, to produce hardware. These are not up and coming operations with big growth potential, and it is unlikely that any new facilities will site there anytime soon.

Also, that house may look beautiful, but as someone that grew up in a 100+ year old house, if its that cheap, its got bad issues. Its accumulated a century of cheap ass patch-jobs and likely needs full refits of the envelope, insulation, and all the paint checked and stripped for lead.

Lead paint is an issue because kids put everything in their mouths, and because paint on contact surfaces like window tracks gets ground into fine dust and inhaled. Black mold is not just a problem for the immuno-compromised. It severely aggravates allergies, and and living around it means perpetually having smarting eyes, a sore throat, and a cough you cant shake. That shit goes everywhere there is any moisture once the spore go airborne. You'll also need to strip out all the old insulation in the wall, and likely any wall board on a facing side. God help you if its in the carpet or ceiling. Asbestos will absolutely give you irritated lungs, and may give you cancer from breathing any dust kicked up by sawing, hammering, or handling the fibers. You know, exactly what you'll have to do anytime you want to do repairs on this century old home.

You're not correct about Deere, there's plenty of white collar work there and they require you to be in-house. I'm not going to say that Davenport is a major hub of economic opportunity, but the big companies that do exist absolutely have big departments of well paid office workers. They just all buy million dollar homes in Pleasant Valley.
