Most of what look like impossible or inherent flaws in democracy are actually just the result of America using a very primitive version of it. First Past the Post is a terrible way to do democracy and only advantage is how simple it is to understand. Reforming it to Instant-Runoff Voting (like Australia uses) would result in third parties with serious political power, because it eliminates the spoiler effect of "vote for the lesser evil or lose your vote".

There's other reforms you could do on top that to improve it further, but you won't see any reform because it would need the support of the two major parties to do it and both of them lose from it.
