Yeah lifeguards here in Aus will just straight up tell you to punch them in the face or basically do whatever you can to get them off you when they start panic drowning you. I think the best way to try and save someone drowning if no other options are available but yourself is to like get behind them and get your arms up under their armpits and lean back and use your legs and hope they aren’t still going full spastic. It honestly amazes me that people can’t swim, I can like just lay on my back and float and only need to kick or move my arms like 3 times every minute to stay a float. I can't float at all. I have to tread water to stay above. But I did get caught by riptide when I was 13. Didn't panic and just swam at a 45 degree angle to the shore. Swam quite a while before I actually reached the beach again, then had to walk way up the beach to find my family. They had no idea anything had happened.
