you get your money back if you show up for your court date(s) as promised. its basically a hedge on the criminal fleeing. sometimes a judge will deny bail to someone deemed a flight risk and/or incredibly dangerous.

if you can't make bail, you can always pay a bail bond company a fee worth about 10% and they'll post bail for you (you don't get that fee back obviously). if you dont make your court date(s) the bail bond company sends out bounty hunters after you lmao

He can just put up the money and pay nothing. He has that much cash right now so not a big deal. Bondsman are 10% with a minimum $500 (seriously legal requirement for them to charge that minimum in some areas). Basically the bail system is designed to fuck poors at this point. What's weird is while they just usually follow a scale I've seen people who aren't huge flight risks get denied bail for long periods over small time minor violent charges. Either way, this kind of case takes years for a conviction so it's kind of amusing. If he didn't think he'd be getting an easy sentence he'd just sit in county jail since it will count towards his time. He either wants to: flee, party, or is scared of fucking baby county jail (in white collar cases this can be worse than prison).

There is no such thing as Federal bail bondsmen. Any district that doesn't allow bond agents allows the judge to 10% the bond, and can decide whether it's full cash or if they also accept property.
