Uni student here. Finance major. Everything has been going smooth until I tried to take calculus and failed. I am confident all of my other classes will be fine if I can just pass calculus and get through with it. This ONE CLASS is what is standing between me and a comfy work from home six figure finance job. I briefly considered switching majors to liberal arts just so I wouldn't have to take calculus but then I would be relegated to being a starbucks barista forever and I've wasted my first 3 weeks this semester having a break down over this fucking calculus class. FUCK

i guess so. but I've also seen plenty of people who are very intelligent but have an irrational fear when it comes to math, as if it's helplessly beyond them. if it doesn't come naturally, that's fine. give yourself plenty of time to get comfortable and familiar with it, do easy exercises to get used to the "basic mechanics" and intuition of it, then progress onto problem-solving. same with anything really.

the idea that certain people and groups somehow suck at math because they are scared of doing it is a huge cope. The social scientists who tried claiming this were unable to replicate their research. People suck at math because they are brainlets.

The people you think are intelligent are probably not actually that intelligent, just eloquent or have something to their appearance or mannerisms that makes them seem competent. We are extremely poor judges of others' intelligence, especially of the opposite sex who we generally just assume are more intelligent because they are sexually attractive (it is weakly correlated though). When I did classes people asked me for help and acted like I was a galaxy brain when really I was just winging it and going uhhh uhhh how can I actually apply what I read last night and half forgot instead of regurgitating it. I'm a dumbass pooron though and my entire life has been a succession of different scenarios in which I just get myself out of shit creek miraculously but am never cruising

Actually work through the problems and memorize your identities. Your issue is probably the underlying algebra and not the calculus. Get a tutor.

>> No.53533396

>>53532073
Calculus is only scary because you don't know the thing.

It is a second language. Learn the individual symbols and what they mean so that when you go to do a calculation your brain isn't running circles trying to interpret the equation left, right and upside down.

After the symbols the next data set is formulaes. You don't need to memorize these so much as know which apply when. Get a broad understanding by grouping up your new language into sections.

Once you have reached this stage and wish to accomplish something, the trick is to write it out in words. Write an essay if you have to. What are you trying to do? how is it accomplished? what are the steps? How would a physical object represent this calculation?

It takes time. Stressing yourself out is only making it harder. You really need to calm down and trust yourself.

Just give it time to simmer in your head.

Nobody is smart or dumb. It just takes some of us longer to learn a thing. If your timeframe is longer than what education offers then you should get into politics and change that because it is fucked up.

You literally prove my point in your post anon. You stated that you're a dumbass, but had more success with math than others because of your attitude to it.
All I'm saying is that if someone sees something as incomprehensible and foreign from the outset, they'll struggle more than they would otherwise. Perhaps you're more likely to be in that state of bewilderment if you're actually dumb, but it doesn't change the fact that your attitude can affect your chances of success or failure.

It's honestly not that bad. Likely your issue is with algebra an not calculus, or something else fundamental. Here's some advice: start at the very beginning of Kahn academy at the number line. You can get through the elementary stuff a year grade every couple of days. Once you have all the pre-calculus stuff out of the way, the actual calculus is not that bad and not really all that much to learn, to be honest. Also, never quit just because you couldn't do a class. Get out before it's on your transcripts and find a workaround. There is always a work around. I've even completed classes at other schools to work around shit I failed the first time.

most things in life are more complex than calc algebra etc. how-ever math fags are sort of sadists in that they enjoy watching others fail and refuse to explain it in a direct way that makes sense to the person asking the questions. mathmatics is the biggest cock tease head game that psuedo intellectuals love to troll people with. As if you spending 2,000 hours studying math somehow makes you any less retarded. there's still flouride in your water, there's still shit in your food, you're still getting fucked over on rent or real estate. mathmatics is a pursuit of mental masturbation and the climax of mathematics is when non mathematicians attempt and fail math for the first time. college is full of gay and aids and cancer and jackasses that love to posit questions that other people have a difficult time answering and then they turn around and say give me your money for attempting to solve my riddles three. A damn carnival. And the really really dirty secret is that it's pay to win. If you're poor you lose. If you're rich you win. It's that simple. Intelligence is not the factor; it's the time and ability to study because there's nothing else going on in your life plus teachers who are willing to explain things in a logical way and throw you some leeway where necessary. that's pretty much it. College intellectuals always do the most retarded shit the moment they step out of a classroom

Anon. You are giving up without a fight. How much have you actually studied? Have you tried different textbooks? Different methods of review and achieving understanding? If this is really the only thing standing in your way, you should go all out- minimum number of credits this semester, 100% of your time not spent doing the bare minimum on those classes should be on your calc class. I get the vibe you are nowhere near that level of pulling out the stops.

What you need to learn right now is not necessarily just calculus, but the ability to teach yourself new information regardless of how novel. In the field of finance, you will be expected to review significant amounts of data, and which of that data is important will change every day. You must be prepared to learn new industries, new technologies at the drop of a hat. THAT is what you must learn this semester - or however long it takes, if you are committed to this path.

Now stop fucking around on the internet. And get back to studying.

Yea he might not need calc if he's not in quant (though my understanding is fixed income for example actually does use it). But if OP only learns to give up in a discouraging scenario, then in a cutthroat field with semi-quantifiable results such as finance he will not, should not succeed. Hence why I have had no problems with any of my other classes, even if I don't put much effort into them. You know why? Because I play the game. Art history class? (it's required) I have to write a paper? Ok, let me write about how the white settlers brutally DISPLACED the native inhabitants and now today their descendants show their struggle through art...

I got an A on that paper. Only in more hardcore stem majors is it where you need to put more work in. Hence after I get calc 1 done I am pretty sure the rest of college will be a breeze due to me already having completed some of my upper level classes

If you are struggling at math, chances are your foundations are shit.

I've seen it plenty of times, pretty smart people who fucking suck at math because they spent a majority of their childhood refusing to do homework that taught fundamentals and basic principles. Then they start 'trying' in their senior years but obviously give up because how the fuck are you supposed to understand things like derivatives if you don't understand preceding concepts (i.e. what's a function)?

If you truly take your time and build your understanding of math from the ground up, you'll find it isn't that hard. There'll be a couple of tricky thinking questions that might take a while to reason out but it's fucking Calc I, not something like proofs.

OP, be glad it's just Calc I. You have more than enough time to start at the foundations, and don't lie to yourself; even if it's an extremely simple concept you're not fully understanding, go back and revisit it until you understand it. It could be worse, you could be incredibly smart and still be a failure. I destroyed Calculus I, II and differential equations I & II with a 99% in all 4 classes before I was 19. The professor was so shocked how easy it came to me, he pushed for me to work as a tutor at the college for advanced math which paid $24/hr. He encouraged me to become a Math professor one day and I said it didn't interest me and now I work for barely above min. wage working along side people who can't do basic algebra in my late 20s. My life is a joke, but I don't feel sorry for myself, I'm just dumbfounded how it got this bad. Flashcards. That's the secret to almost everything. You can brute force information into your head at lightning speed and retain the information for a year+. I get it, math can be kind of abstract and difficult to wrap your mind around sometimes, but there's really nothing more inherently difficult about calculus than algebra or trigonometry. You're just not used to it yet. It takes some people more time to learn and absorb these concepts, but you should keep trying, and dispel this notion that you're simply too dumb to get it. I had to drop out of college algebra I on my first attempt because it was too hard at the time, but I eventually was able to pass calc I&II, discrete math and linear algebra with my lowest grade being a B. I was still the same person with the same level of intelligence, but my ability to conceptualize math-related concepts improved with practice

That's it man, brute force it. You don't need to be smart to ace a class, but you need to be really smart to destroy a subject. Once you memorize a concept, talk out loud and pretend you're teaching it to someone else, you'll reinforce the concept even more. Then the next day, recall it in your head and teach it again without looking at the flashcards. 1 week later, refresh flashcards. Congratulations, you'll now remember this thing for a year or more.

Just repeatedly do exercises and problems with solutions until you can do problems with answers in the back of the book and then do the problems without answers in the back of the book and get sweaty until you find out how to find those answers. Probably don't even think about the concepts. Concepts are nice but if you can't mechanically grind through problems then your conceptual knowledge won't be reflected in your grade. Probably. Very probably.

IDK your situation but, for me, I never learned how to do any of this while sitting in class. When I taught, I tried to teach mostly how to do example problems that weren't covered in the book or didn't have answers in the book. Once you do enough problems from each section, your internal classifier will see that it's the same thing over and over again on some level. It's just that there are components of that same thing that perhaps you forgot how to do properly. Believe it or not, adding fractions for example trips people up even in DiffEq. Why that is, is simply a matter of practice. Most don't use it, so they forget, but learning it well the first time makes Platonic recall easier.

I haven't seen this brought up enough, lol. So I always grew up thinking I wanted to do comp sci. Sadly I got filtered by basic pre-calculus. I failed it twice. Switched to English and I'm in my senior year of college. Let's hope it works out for me.

If you can't do math you are inferior, simple as.

Learning the arbitrary rules of language is much less important than learning the rules of the physical world, math is the first step toward understanding the universe you live in.

Anon
Derivative of x^y is yx^(y-1)
Integral of x^y is (x^(y+1))/(y+1)

How is this shit hard?

Calc is used to weed out the weak. If your school resorted to it it means they are too busy flushing out idiots later on. I'm sorry.
