Engineers fucked themselves. They demanded extremely high salaries for work that isn't even close to proportional to their output, but companies gave in anyway cause the returns on paying some monkeys above market price to build their product was exponential. Seeing these inflated salaries everybody and their mother went into STEM, and now the STEM field is beyond oversaturated with no signs of slowdown in supply for the next decade atleast.

No matter what "experienced" monkeys tell you, it's easy to find a decently skilled engineer on a competitive wage relative to what morons with an inflated sense of their worth demand. So wages become stagnant, because there's barely any change in the quality of work done when you hire a person that demand 150k compared to a person that demands 80k, the only difference is that the former is a conman while the latter is more grounded in their ability to contribute.

The tech industry is going through wild fluctuations and there is absolutely no way to sustain 6 figures straight out of college income when the output simply doesn't match. Most of these tech companies run on pipe dreams promising their investors that they will "disrupt" XYZ function in the market and secure massive investments, but the deliverables are almost never met and investors are starting to notice that there's been virtually no real disruptions in the market since FAANG, 5 of which are almost two decades old. Expect codemonkey salaries to start stagnating and going way down by 2030, IT is basically going to turn into a blue collar gig given the enormous supply of workers and low barrier to entry in the industry.

Some positions might be possible if you start as a machinist, but you need to know at least mass and energy transfer, fluid statics, heat exchange, and circuits to be a process engineer, which means knowing differential equation level math. I'm a ChE though. Other portions of ME will require other engineering knowledge such as thermo, fluid dynamics, controls/transforms, and finite element analysis.

The coasts have kind of decoupled from cost of living. Anyways, a mid level chemical engineer can expect to make 120-150k easily. This is hilarious, and incorrect. White women and minorities got forced into stem. Women are abandoning the industry at a 50% clip, and that’s only those who didn’t go to grad school or elsewhere. Minorities at 80%.
What’s happening in reality is that companies are having to implement insanely rigorous training programs to fill the gaping holes in their diversity hires knowledge.
Wages are going through the roof now because boomers retired and Stacy doesn’t like being sweaty as she stands next to a tank filled with poison. Over half of the people who got those stem degrees will be out of the industry within 10 years.
