Losses can be carried forward for years, while gains have to be paid up the next year in taxes. So if you've got a winner you want to sell now, you take your bags from bad trades you don't think will recover soon and sell them off for a loss. You lose money on paper, but you wind up not paying taxes on your win. A year and a day later you can rebuy your bags and if they haven't gone back up, you just "profited" however much you saved in taxes.

Example: you made money on bitcoin, and lost money holding $META. You sell the $META at a loss and the bitcoin at a gain so that your capital gains for the year evens out at 0 (really $40k or whatever amount in your state is tax free). You know bitcoin is super volatile so you can just buy more later, once it crashes. You're also Nancy Pelosi, and you know from insider sources that $META is never ever recovering.
