If you bothered learning what you're talking about, Ramsey frequently refers to transportation (ie. your car) as one of the "four walls" (essential expenses that need to be covered to live in society).

He's not saying walk everywhere. He's saying sell your $40k car that you're in debt for and making payments on, and buy a $2k beater with cash to drive for a year or two until you're out of debt. Then once your net worth is actually positive and you've built up an emergency fund, you can afford to save up and buy something nicer (but still appropriate for your income) in cash.

I drive a $2k car lmao. I've driven the same car for like 15 years. You want to know how many times it's "broke down" on me other than flat tires and things that weren't mechanical problems with the car? Like once when the fuel pump went out, that's it. Replaced it for like $150 in parts.

Find something with one or only a few owners in the Carfax history and there's a good chance they've babied and taken care of it. If you're pretty interested in buying at that point, take it to a mechanic and spend $100 or whatever to get it inspected before buying. If they find major issues you can decline to buy it and keep looking. If they find more minor issues but stuff that will still need to be addressed, you may be able to talk the buyer down and save more than the inspection cost you.

It won't be fancy, but if you look around you can find higher mileage cars that are still plenty reliable and mechanically sound for $2-3k. If you want to bump the price up you can find something newer and/or lower mileage for more, but going to be kind of hard to justify spending $10k on a depreciating asset like a car when you have a negative net worth. It's certainly a myth that you have to go into $20k of debt to get something that's safe and reliable.

His point was you're paying property taxes regardless. You think the landlord would be renting to you if he was losing money? It's a business, your rent has to cover maintenance, taxes, insurance, etc. plus enough profit for it to be worth the capital invested and effort for the landlord.

Meanwhile, like the other anon mentioned, most states and counties actually offer a homestead tax credit to reduce property taxes on your primary residence. So you're actually paying more property taxes (indirectly) as a renter than homeowners are directly because the landlord gets no credit since the property is an investment, whereas homeowners do get a credit since the property is their residence.

Keep coping, though.

But Ramsey is talking about actively-managed mutual funds with relatively high expense ratios, perhaps 1%. Actively-managed funds almost always do worse than the overall market over the long term, especially when you factor in their costs.

I could pay $50/m to get to work and basically travel everywhere in my country via bus and train BUT that would mean that I have to get up 45mins earlier in the morning AND I have to walk for 15mins. thats not worth it, I need 30 min to get up, eat, brush teeth and arrive at work with my car.

Ramsey is stubborn and prideful, despite the mountains of evidence on the folly of trying to pick the best active manager. He cannot admit that the average Joe, or his viewers, should simply index and get the market return, minus 0.01% fee. He sticks to his "shop around and get 12%" line.

Unironically if everything was within (reasonable) walking or cycling distance I would sell my car. I'm mid 30s now, I was a "car guy" in my 20s when I was a normie cunt and I've had some cars that people only dream of.

Also, buying a cheap old nail is a meme and nobody actually does it on purpose, only those who live in poverty.
Most people treat their cars like shit out of ignorance or just carelessness so you have to presume any 2nd hand car you buy has been treated poorly.

Or bike or take the bus, yes. I haven't owned a car in all my life, it's no problem at all if you live in a halfway decent area. And it's not because of money that I don't have a car, I have a net worth of like $400k, a car is just pointless to me.

You should. You can live in a 99% white high trust society in an affordable home in a walkable small town and then take a 20-30 min commute through scenic farm land byway at 70 mph to Omaha to wage slave.
