I'm 40 years old with 2 kids. I make $170k/year which is a reasonable salary (I think).

I have a modest home, do not spend on luxury goods at all, at most take one vacation a year usually for around 10 days.

I am very frugal and put everything away I can into investments.

I stand ZERO chance at retirement at my current rate of savings without significantly reducing quality of life to basically that of a poor person, and sacrificing my children's education.

The ONLY reason I might be able to retire is because my boomer parents, who were both teachers, were able to save a ton of money and today are worth like $3MM or so, and with their pensions and social security they have basically a $200k salary and do not need to spend their savings so I will get half of whatever they die with.

They also had 2 kids in a modest home, in a good neighborhood with a good school system.

I really feel awful for all the people my age or younger who don't have wealthy parents they'll inherit from.

How did we fuck society so badly? How do we fix it?

It’s obviously a shitty larp. The probability of a 40 year old making 175k/year frog posting and having 0 money for shit compared to the probability of this being a stinking NEET doomer posting because McJew denied his application for the 10’th time this month is vastly in favor of the NEET.

>> No.55809455

>>55809278
That's the crux of it - if you aren't from a wealthy family, you don't start earning a decent salary until your very late 20s or early 30s. And even if he was saving 2k/month/20years, 500k-1mil is not enough for him to retire.

>>55809244
What you really don't understand is that there is a huge difference between me sitting in grandma's basement by myself (which I am) and people whose actual life is on 170k. They don't have dreams/options - they go to work and do their chores and it's their life. They can't spend a month modding their car or upskilling. That's the problem.

He said he sends his kids to a good school, nice neighborhood, etc etc. Maybe $170k isn't enough in that area? Maybe that's just what you need to get by. Each neighborhood and area has their own local cost of living. He's probably in an area where they actually make below the median household income.
If he had a cheaper house, settled on public school, etc etc, then maybe he could retire. But he chose a trajectory in which he can't retire because he's living above his means. And he refuses to accept this reality and seems like he just wants someone to tell him his decision making wasn't entirely retarded.

The car payments are realistic - if you are working full time, and have to drive to work, you want to pay for a reliable pleb car, aka a Camry or Accord. I say this as someone who has owned a $1500 Integra, a $3000 Miata, and done all his own work. It's absolutely unreasonable to expect from a normal person. Nor is it reasonable to expect them to be ok with the car breaking down randomly, being too embarrassing to have a co-worker in, etc.

>keeping come current
Coworker just got changed $6000 to replace gutters. Ditto on A/C or heater breaking. Or the garage door. Or needing a retaining wall / drainage ditch because the basement is flooding. Everything gets old - that's how houses become "grandma houses". These expenses exist even if you do all the work yourself.

Mowing - yea, sure, you could do it yourself or buy a robot mower.

I make 50k before taxes and still live with my mom nearing the age of 30. My state taxes me out the ass and I make 38k after taxes. Rent in my area is 2,000 for a run down single bedroom apartment. Managed to save and invest up to 70k for a down payment but now the houses in my area that were 500k before covid are 1 million+ and I've basically given up. My real life was supposed to start years ago. Part of me wants to just pack it up and try to rough it in another state but I'm already miserable and lonely and don't think I could handle the isolation. My Dad left with a big inheritance from his parents when I was a teenager and started a new family on the other side of the country, I still talk to him maybe once or twice a year and when I tell him about my situation he basically says tough luck kiddo, and goes on a typical boomer rant about how much easier kids have it now and that I should just move to the ghetto, meanwhile he was able to buy a 3 bedroom house in a white suburb and support 3 kids with no college education at the age of 30. I'm in 2 minds about homeschooling. If you have the time and parenting skills, then it shouldn't be half bad. Would much rather teach my kids the basics of reading, writing, spelling, counting and computers. Much better than whatever modern day schools are trying to teach.

Only issue is that it's much harder to keep kids on track with their learning when they have no pressure from other kids. Where's the competition if it's just you? How can you gauge how well you are doing if you are only competing with yourself? I would imagine it also decreases motivation a lot as well.

(I have no actual experience with homeschool, so these are just my thoughts on what little knowledge I have.)

Don't bother spending money on your kids education. If you absolutely have to, get private tutors. If you send them to private school they will be discriminated against for university admissions as they will be seen as 'more privileged'. Tutors should be cheaper anyway.

Besides that, start investing in property, businesses and anything which produces an income. The age of starting from the ground up, being able to get a good job, buy a house, start a family and retire is gone. Intergenerational wealth and nepotism will be more crucial than ever before as we are moving away from a meritocracy. If your kids are white and male they will be at a permanent disadvantage regardless of their GPA or their education. Good luck.

I see no reason to keep up appearances any more. What are people gonna do, judge me? Lmao. I just want to maybe make an indie game now. Then die I guess.

>Only issue is that it's much harder to keep kids on track with their learning when they have no pressure from other kids.
They're not learning anything though. I goofed off with math (literally hid my worksheets behind my dresser and told my parents I got a B) and just crammed practice problems during the first two weeks of calculus when I got to college.

The bar is so low for high school graduates you could almost get away with teaching them nothing and they'd still better than average.

take the neofuedalism pill
you build a homestead in an arable but practically empty state that has no wires in the walls and no pipes in the house
bath in a wood fired sauna, cook on a gas stove, use solar for a fridge only and to charge phones and laptops for entertainment or work or education, build a basement to circulate air to condition the air and use a humidity exchanger to keep the basement from getting damp
maybe the walls are hempcrete and the roof is stone plated so both last for centuries without maintenance and then you fish hunt and farm for a lot of your food
besides that get normal groceries and maybe do some wfh gig and take as many vacations as you want, just stay near an airport.
