I do come back here from time to time to see what the "stock market" is doing, but if it isn't crashed I go back to work and collect interest on my treasuries. See ya, bulltards. They generally call this market making, or providing liquidity.
If you're going all-in on highly volatility swing trades at 3x leverage though, you're probably going to blow your portfolio up. Usually these types of strategies see outlier winners reach portfolio sizes of upper 5-figs or low 6-figs before blowing up. In rare circumstances, much higher. Archegos made it into the billions.
It's simply not sustainable to attempt to provide more liquidity than you're capable of supporting.

That's why you buy something that is clearly already low. See, I knew (or thought) that oil wouldn't go lower than the 60s, so slurping around $68 or $67 was a good blend of likely enough to happen yet not so high that the drawdown would hurt too much. So when it goes in the wrong direction, which it often does, you just wait until it goes back up in the right direction. You see it many times in the graph >>55974097, sometimes my timing was quite tragic, like when I bought the first time right before a huge flash dip, but that's ok, if you bought low and it gets lower you just wait it out, you won't have to wait too long either.

>>55974167
>If you're going all-in on highly volatility swing trades at 3x leverage though, you're probably going to blow your portfolio up
Oil would have had to go in the lower 50s for me to get margin called. Based on my awareness of the situation at the time I thought that was reasonably unlikely. The key that many people miss is you actually buy low, you don't buy based on what you think is gonna happen next, you don't buy because you think it will go higher, you buy because you think it's unlikely to go much lower. This gives you an asymmetry, the price might go up or down, but it's (soft) limited in how far down it can go, a drawdown is unlikely to be either deep or lasting, so you calculate your risk based on how bad things could get and leave some more room. I didn't think oil would go below $62 and it didn't but even if it went to $58 I could have waited it out.

In the case of doing this with PYPL I have positions worth somewhat less than my portfolio.

Retards are all bullish in this meme stonk market. Top economists experts expect a recession, it’s needed to get a fair market value of everything. NVDA Bull tards are about to get rug pulled so hard due to it being overvalued and their revenue doesn’t justify the valuation. AMD just came out with a new chip that surpasses NVDA’s capabilities, which is a literal black swan event for NVDA. NVDA shouldn’t be compared to Apple or TSLA. Apple can justify their valuation because their revenue speaks volumes for itself, and not TSLA since it’s an entirely different industry and they’re the pioneers for EV Engineering.

I blew up my account back in spring 2020 thinking oil wouldn't go negative. It did.
Was it low at the time? Yes.
Did it go lower anyway? Also yes.

I'm not saying your trades aren't smart or that the probabilities go against you or that the average outcome is not a win. What I am saying is that over an extended sequence, without proper risk management you will eventually have some unforseen circumstance that will cause you to lose everything. Look up the kelly criterion for a mathematical model of this concept. You might think it doesn't apply because stocks trade more continuously than a binary event, but there are gaps between open hours, and sometimes liquidity vanishes right when you need to exit.

For commodities you have an easy way of doing this, you look at their multidecade chart divided by CPI, it gives you a good idea of what's historically low. So like for wheat right now a good slurp zone would be in the lower 500s, of course it's hard to tell if it will go there, and for natgas a few months ago I would always slurp at $2.00, and then you had oats at or below $330, those are historically fairly cheap prices so it's not a bad idea to slurp them at such prices. The key is to make sure it's cheap not just relative to the previous year or you might catch a falling knife, but cheap compared to a much longer timeframe. Of course you have to watch out for contango, which can be quite strong with the new lumber contracts so I have to be extra cautious with them now, I can't hold them for weeks.

It's when the situation someday goes against you that I hope you'll be able to think back to conversations like this and understand how you fucked up. That's the only way you'll ever grow.

>well that was a real bad time to play with oil because something unusual was happening
It wasn't unusual until it happened. That's exactly the point. You can never know with 100% certainty that Iran will bomb an embassy tomorrow, or Biden will announce a new SPR release, or China will shut back down and re-enter covid zero policy, or Saudi's will cut ties and unilaterally end current OPEC agreements while draining their entire onshore storage and pumping full speed right into the biggest demand collapse ever.
That's the thing about breaking news, the price and fundamentals and setup looks perfectly normal until the news actually breaks. Then the next day the market opens and you no longer have a portfolio.

I mean, financial indicators all suggest NVDA is ovewrpriced. Their PE ratio is too high, and I think it's impossible to keep their EPS as high as it was this quarter. Look, the numbers say it's going to go down. But it's also being meme'd and since kids have money to throw into this economy, that actually means something these days. You think any trader using robinhood looks at PE ratio, EPS, profit margins, or ROE? So they'll buy it regardless because all they know is tiktok told them it's going to pump. Yeah, eventually they'll lose their money, but in the meme economy, I don't know when that actually is. I guess when tiktok starts telling them to sell?

Then it sounds like you do already understand, and this entire discussion is based on a false premise of leverage.
If you hold a position at 3x leverage, and the account is only 1/3rd of your account, you're not really on 3x leverage until/unless the leveraged position grows more and maintains its leverage (ex SOXL)
If you double 1/3rd of your portfolio, you've really only earned 33%.
For the future, I'd recommend against hyping up leverage unless you're actually truly all in in terms of liquid assets. It's a bit confusing and leads to newer traders thinking they can take on stupider risks. Perhaps that's inevitable, though.

Their underlying is futures, but besides fees there are losses from rebalancing and stuff like that. ETFs providers trade the same futures as you but get something out of it, plus they have to rebalance a lot which you probably wouldn't do.

>>55974613
>If you double 1/3rd of your portfolio, you've really only earned 33%.
I wouldn't call it 1/3 of my portfolio, my portfolio is my portfolio, the rest of my money is something else. So I didn't really increase my net worth by +300% by trading in 2023, only the nominal portfolio value without counting the backup money. That also means that I'm supposed to send some of my gains away. I still consider that a margin call is the thing to avoid though so when I trade I don't really think about the rest of the money. So it's a bit misleading to omit the rest of my money, but on the other hand I do trade with only what's in my portfolio, and no one trades with 100% of their money.

I think they're just doing what they've always done, preempt the Feds next move which is probably going to be turning on the printer, but as you say, that reignites inflation and means the poor in America get poorer and start blaming Jews and immigrants (they're already doing this and it's election season until next year).
Idk how it all ends. Jeff Snider keeps saying they will have to just print because they have no other cards left to play and the debt bubble just keeps inflating to fucking insane levels. Who knows how this shitshow ends.

The FED has said numerous times, that they wont go soft on inflation.
So inflation is the most important thing to look for, not bad jobs numbers.
The Fed wont start printing just because of bad job numbers, if inflation stays high.

I'm with you, but the Fed has also pussied out many times. You're right in how the inflation fight is what they claim they are fighting but they always end up cucking. (Snider covers this a lot, if you don't tune into Eurodollar University you really should)
I'm just impressed that Powell has managed to not cuck out this long. My schizo take is that Biden has given the nod to keep interest rates high because he/Dems can't afford to lose the poor vote in 2024, otherwise we get Trump. The poors are the ones who end up getting cheaper cost of basics like food and fuel when interest rates are high. (Powell has said this in nearly every speech he has given, he's not hiding his motive)
This doesn't help people who are losing jobs because companies are cutting back because there's no cheap (0% interest rate) bank funding anymore.

Ironically the prospect of Trump in 2024 might actually cause the crash.
