We’ve been in a recession. Just because they changed the definition doesn’t change that.

>> No.56106569

The pay raises the UAW want is reasonable enough, especially with how inflation has been, and the profits the automakers have had over the last several years.

Now the whole 32 week for 40 hour pay thing is just retarded, and would massively mess up scheduling at the plants.

The defined compensation pensions is another stickler; frankly I think they are dumb in general concept, as companies can't really predict how future investments and business will go over the decades long planning you need for pensions; those pensions can easily end up being a giant anchor around a company's neck. Asking for higher defined contributions to 401k plans would be a lot more reasonable.

in 2023 people look late 1800's as insane times when typical work week was 12 hours 6 days a week

in 2050 when people will work max 1-2 hours a day on average, people look at 2020 people were insane with their 40h work weeks.

That implies we'll be able to maintain the infrastructure and supply chains for automation to pick up the slack. At the rate we're going we'll still have a lot of people working <40 hours a week but it'll be because the only job they could get was part-time.

Part of the reason those no frills cars went away is that most people were choosing higher trim levels, and with economies of scale kicking in adding those extra power features only added a small amount to the manufacturing costs. So it ended up being cheaper for manufacturers to streamline their inventory and just make that stuff standard.

Another reason is that used cars got a lot better; why by a cheap new shit box when you can get a pretty nice 3 year old car that has just come off a lease for about the same price?

I don't think anyone who is worth their weight in salt will for work for less than $20/hr unless they are using that job for some synergistic or ulterior motive or it's really convenient for them like they can walk to it in 5 minutes.

I don't understand how anyone living outside of metro Detroit thinks that the Detroit Three (no longer the Big Three, remember) have such a massive effect on the economy. Doesn't Chrysler make two models of cars? Didn't Ford move assembly to Mexico? Genuinely asking, and I'm probably wrong, but acting like the central nexus of the American economy is in the state known for their inability to repair roads or have first world tier electric utility (DTE) is like pretending a nation of people struggling with plumbing would make good IT staff.

The big 3 have plants all over the US and elsewhere. The 150k workers in the US all have 30/hour jobs. That doesnt even look at all of the suppliers that make parts for these plants. If all 3 eventually are completely stalled that is looking at hundreds of thousands of workers making decent money suddenly no longer spending money and buying stuff, basic necessities will be the main focus if this strike lasts any length of time. So at a time when millions of people have to start repaying student loans, another sector of the economy that i want to guess does not have such loans will also stop spending money. Double whammy for "solidarity".

As an aside i theorize this is all to force austerity and fundamentally change the US economy and mindset.
