I just barely graduated High School.
First heard about it from headlines off a Digg article about the 10,000 BTC pizza purchase.
Digg was the predecessor to Reddit at the time around 2010-2012.
I was into computers at the time building a mid-range PC and I knew that you could mine Bitcoin trading off your GPU power.
I did google "How do you mine Bitcoin?" around 2010 to 2012 but I was too much of a brainlet to understand mining pools and take any interest further to fully conceptualize and understand.

I was into libertarianism at the time and if I had read the white paper I would have held that shit no tomorrow.
I would have probably fucked it up keeping my funds in an exchange.
But I would have been a lot richer now than I am currently am right now in 6 figure hell holding Link.
I only really got into crypto after the 2017 bullrun

I tried mining btc in the summer of 2011 on my desktop with a radeon hd 4870, it brought my computer fans up to 100% and it was loud as fuck and turned my bedroom into a sauna. I left it on overnight and got nothing so I said fuck it and closed it and never tried again.
Then I mined doge in 2014, a bunch of friends mined millions and sold them for a few thousand. I got 70k of them and held while they kept dropping in value.
2017 rolls around, ethereum starts taking off, I start buying in around $60 but it quickly moves up to $100+, coinbase prevents me from buying more than a few hundred dollars a week. Decide to check what my doge were worth and it was like $20 so I said fuck it and swapped all of them to ethereum. Soon after doge starts mooning and I miss out completely.
I had been working a few years by that point so I had some money, decided to wire 4k (25% of my NW) to Quadraga, ends up being some random bank in Japan. I buy ether with it, and withdrew to my own wallet, luckily before Quadraga shut down.
Meanwhile ICO craze goes off, I manage to flip ICOs and get more eth, get to about 80 eth. One ICO is LINK, I had 36k at one point but flipped all but 1000 of them for I think 30 or 40 eth. Would have been enough to make it at ATH but every other ICO went to 0 so I thought it'd do the same.
Also built a mining rig for ethereum, made a few thousand dollars and resold the hardware for a profit.
Anyway, put almost everything into ICX the day it gets listed on exchanges, see my portfolio explode to 800k. Waiting for 7figs and it never happens, sell like 30k just to cover my initial investments. Keep holding while my portfolio crashes down to 30k.
Decide to keep accumulating since then, dollar cost averaging into btc/eth/link and some random alts. Sitting on 270k now.
So many mistakes were made, in hindsight I could have made it 5 times over if I played things slightly differently.
Maybe this bullrun I'll make it.

I worked a summer job in 2011, 16 years old. Was coming into my political identity w/ Ron Paul running for election. A guy I worked with was in his early 20s going to college, also libertarian minded, and shilled me bitcoin. Said he invested some and thinks it could be a big thing someday. My first reaction was "sounds like a scam" because he mentioned having to buy it with fucking gift cards. He assured me it wasn't and that I should check it out. Still skeptical, I went home and started doing some research. After reading how the whole thing worked and spending a few days thinking, despite barely understanding half of it, I was also convinced it had a lot of potential. So I went down the rabbit hole of how best to get in. Buying or mining. After a couple of days I found one of the main sites for buying bitcoin, might have been coinmama or some shit. Seemed pretty simple, setup a wallet, send the gift code and they credit your account after a few days. But that last part... sending a fucking gift code. It just didn't sit right with me. It screamed scam. So I didn't buy.

I suspect many, many people were filtered for similar reasons early on. It was relatively easy to buy in, yes, but it was sketchy as fuck. Think I was looking at buying a few hundred bitcoin for a grand or so. It's funny looking back to think I was that close to pulling the trigger, but you can't be hard on yourself for not doing it. All we can do is look ahead.

Of the people who bought back then, a very small fraction actually held through all of the ups and downs. Investing is a faith in a way, you have to have a plan or a time horizon and just religiously stick to it, because investing with your feelings or even your mind is a fool's game, you will be buying and selling at the wrong time and paying harsh taxes for the privilege.
