Does no one care about the divide that is currently occurring between Ripple and independent XRPL nodes/validators?

A Ripple engineer has put forth a proposal for amendment which includes formalising a pay to play governance model for the XRPL. Some long serving infrastructure providers have taken insult to this, suggesting Ripple is being underhanded and attempting to steal power back on what is supposed to be a decentralized network.
I see this as somewhat bullish as if Ripple no longer cares about the facade of decentralization, it means it's go time, and they want to get rid of potential troublemakers on the XRPL that can fuck around with its performance.
The other possible outcome here is the XRPL collapses because there isn't enough bandwidth being supported by nodes.
All i know is that it seems like a bunch of old men shaking their fist at a cloud, with surprised pikachu faces when they realise Ripple actually wants control of the network it created.
Maybe this means we can go back to calling them "Ripples" instead of XRP like the good old days
