"Dividend Aristocrats" underperform non-dividend paying stocks in uptrends, in general. Picking 30 companies, then managing them, fusions, splits etc. it much work, you will reape easily more fines than etf's which are mostly super cheap. Also, people are not maybe aware of these, but indexes correct itself very often, bad companies drop off fee free which is in long term super handy

"The S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrat index was launched by Standard and Poors in May 2005 and has historically outperformed the S&P 500 index with lower volatility over longer investment time frames. For example, over the past 10 years through the period ending June 30, 2018, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrat index has returned 13.28% on an average annual basis, compared to the S&P 500 index which has returned only 10.17% annually during that same period. The risk factor commonly called the standard deviation of the S&P 500 during this same 10 year period was 14.71% while the Dividend Aristocrat risk factor or standard deviation was 13.63% or 7.34% lower than the S&P 500."

So are you saying that these returns are based upon in this case the 2008-09 recession? That Dividend Aristocrats should be bought into during bear markets and you should move back into the normal ETFs when we go bull?

So high dividend yield companies are 'defensive' stocks?

That's what I figured...

I'm 30 years old and have never set up an IRA or 401k for myself. I've got $50k that I use to play around with stocks and futures but I've never put anything into an actual retirement account. I've also always worked as an independent contractor so I've never had an employer who would contribute to a retirement account if I had one so that's one reason why I never bothered.

This year I'm going to start throwing money into maxing out the tax deferred investment accounts that are available to me, I'll have to figure out how to set them up so that they're self-managed but that shouldn't be too hard I'd imagine.

It depends on if you're "trading for profit" or "investing for growth". If you're trading then you should be setting a price target and loss exit before you even buy. As the stock approaches your price target then you re-evaluate whether you should sell at that point or raise your target higher. If you're investing for growth then you just keep "dollar cost averaging" over time and accumulating more and more shares in companies that have promising future prospects and growth potential and just hold them for years, occasionally trimming some companies from your holdings that are serious underperformers.

many questions.

1. how does one evaluate an ETF? the more i'm learning about investing, the more i'm realizing that my burning desire to buy VYM is illogical and stupid. past performance doesn't guarantee future performance... but in the case of an ETF that's managed like VYM, it kind of does? it means that the group managing this fund is smart enough to beat the market right? on the other hand, maybe they're just leveraged and they're riding the upswing.

2. i've been thinking a lot about IPOs as an indicator of market health. with the spectacular failure that HMNY is proving to be, i'm reminded of times in the past when shit companies IPOd just because the market was rising and it could work out for them in the short term. i've been pumping some of my friends for access to data sets, will report back when i finish the analysis. anyone else look into this?

3. i'm also reading think and grow rich which seems like really obvious disinfo the further i get into it. it was written on the suggestion of carnegie and as such has a huge section sucking him off... it's got a weird section in there trying to convince the reader that privatizing schools is the best for everyone... and if _wanting it_ is all you needed then "the disaster artist" never would have been made. it's not about numbers, it's about desire? this runs exactly counter to graham and buffett and honestly i ain't buying it.

next catalyst is not missing earnings
which means today; after hours

I'll be completely honest with you; I can see a very harsh pullback if things don't go the way I want them to; I got a lot of calls on HCLP
You may have your buy opportunity if you wait today, and if they beat and you miss the ship; just buy puts at the spikes tomorrow and wait for the after earnings pullback.
I don't know what happens past this point. I never thought I'd see the day I become a Redjak poster but it could be today.
I've done all the research I can do, and I was right so far. 20% up for the week is good; but they're due for a pullback from the last week.

Give it time, they're still undervalued but I think you can do better than the current price.

Skhreli shitting on pharma reporters. His blog is definitely the best news resource in pharma today in the entire world. Ex: CEO genius blogposting from jail with copious free time to focus on this.

Quote from his blog about pharma journalists (CNBC being shit specifically mentioned):
Spend more time reading books and less time giving out an unearned opinion. I doubt many “communications” majors (or most other liberal arts majors) are intelligent enough (yes, I am going there) to have done well in mathematics and statistics. As Dalio says, ask yourself if you’ve earned the right to have an opinion. You should not opine on biopharmaceuticals unless the above is facile and simple to you. Statistics is the lens with which we see the modern data-driven world. Go back to school and actually learn something, if you have to. The above are trivially basic–we don’t go into Bayes vs frequentist, ANOVA, actual math of a statistical test, stratification methods, parameterization, multiplicity correction techniques, LOCF/BOCF and missing data and other still simple topics.

You're right saying that paper trading is completely different from trading with actual money. When you lose your ass paper trading you think to yourself, "eh, it's not real money, these losses don't matter" and you end up getting used to making risky trades because there's no real consequence, then when a few of your risky trades work out and you make gains off of them you think, "fuck, look at all the money I could've made if I'd been using real money instead of this monopoly money bullshit". Then you start trading with real money and get BTFO because you still make the same type of stupid high-risk trades that you were doing while paper trading.
