>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

It looks like today's strength in the dude weed was mainly due to the credible rumors that Altria (big tobacco) is considering buying a stake in Aphria. Aphria flew up somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% today before pulling back to +15% at close. ACB and WEED held steady, both were in the green for much of the day and closed at modest fraction of 1% loss each.

I believe this strength under highly bearish overall market conditions indicate the dude weed sector will indeed break new ATH before the end of the year. These market troubles are only going to temporarily delay the moon shots. October 17th sell off may not occur as expected. If the news is long line ups and supply shortages for day one sales, sector will pump on that news.

okay newbie question. I currently possess a twitter put option with expiration date of 10/12. Got it through robinhood, paid $0.68/share and have 100 shares (i.e., 1 contract total). Option is in the money, and it will remain in the money so long as twitter is worth less than $31.32 on 10/12 (which I suspect will be the case).
>wat do?
Do I hold it until expiration? Never held on to a contract for this long and have not had the experience of going all the way to expiration with one.

Its a good prediction of your sell profit based on the mid, usually its only off a cent or two.

I try to trade based on high IV (sell options at high vega and plan on a return to mean), but if you're trading delta then its good to do put or call spreads within a good SD range, anything with above 65% probability of profit is a good gamble if you're sold on the direction of the underlying.

Speaking of the dude weed, reminder that anyone interest in Tetra BioPharma would be wise to buy in prior to October 17th. Tetra have had a deal with a major pharma distribution outfit for some time now which stipulated in the original agreement to remain anonymous until Canadian federal legalization is official and active. This partner is expected to be revealed on or shortly after the 17th.

Tetra remains my pick for most potential upside in the entire weed sector from current prices.

Oh man. That had to be a bummer. My first six months were a rollercoaster. 2014, trading pharma shit. Went up 100% within one month of trading. Lost all of them plus an additional 10% in the following five months. Didn't recover until the end of the year. In hindsight I will say that that was a good learning experience for me. I got exposure to both sides of severe volatility, the mania and the despair. I learned to toughen up and stick to goddamn strategy until strategy proves itself flawed.

the idea was ATR couldnt be violated too badly

trades would be initatied by observance of orderflow, if saw big buys above level + no many sellers, than trade triggered!

but lately days have been VERY RANGING, there are equal amount of buyers and sellers, so its been very hard for range trade

I've been working on a news/real politik indicator as Ichimoku w/pivots has been working really well but I want to see if I can make it more specific by feeding it more data. I did not have this deployed for the last few weeks. On Oct 3 I had an intraday short scalp. The following day I closed longs and went full bear. This is the notable day as Ichimoku turned bearish and support break on pivots really did not look well. I closed a small portion of position the following day as it appeared there may be a bounce off the cloud. I have remained bearish since. I am expecting a bounce tomorrow based on ichi and bond yields. 10y is resting on a pivot currently. If it bounces there will be more pain in equities.

The biggest thing I learned from this is to look at bonds more closely. Ichi indicated a bond bull run on Sept 10, well in advance equity troubles. You can clearly see equities market bull run slow down in response to this.

US economy is strongest in the world right now, don't let chink dumping scare you into doubting.

That's what happens when normies pay insane multiples for undiversified tech "giants" that can erode their userbase in <5 years if a better competitor comes along.

IMO Google is the safest tech stock but not immune to these kind of pressures. Tech changes way too fast, and paying to break even in 10-20 years is delusional.

Yes, but the idea is that General Motors is much more diversified, and has a valuable self-driving unit they might even spin off if they get into trouble. Ford only makes decent money on their pickups, which are basically cars hicks buy but don't need, that's one of the reasons they are at such a low P/E. Any investor can see the risks there. Most of the top hedge fund managers & even Buffett are holding General Motors over Ford. The risk/return is much better.

ford has low profit margin on cars, huge profit margin on trucks

they are also preparing for electric vehicles in a few years

so instead of spreading themselves too thin, they are stopping their less profitable division, and focusing on making profits, while they finish testing and bugfixing electric vehicles to make them profits in the future

seems prudent, seeing how they were the only car company that didnt go bankrupt or need bailout money last time a crash happens

and they havnt stopped making cars globally, just in america since they dont bring in profits

and they still make mustangs, their number one selling cars
they are just pausing their unprofitable divisions so that they can be reworked and made profitable, and preparing for future markets, all while continuing to churn out units for their big money making divisions, which sounds prudent to me

tbqh I'm suprised they didnt do this sooner

If you have no idea what to do, allocate to this portfolio and you can mostly avoid the crash. This is based on Bridgewater's "All Weather" Portfolio. Essentially you weight 4 asset classes based on their risk to get as low volatility as you possibly can, while still getting decent returns.

>30% US Stocks
Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF: $VTI
>40% Long-Term U.S. Treasuries
iShares 20+ Year Treasury ETF: $TLT
>15% Intermediate-Term US Treasuries
iShares 7-10 Year Treasury ETF: $IEF
>7.5% Gold
SPDR Gold Shares ETF: $GLD
>7.5% Commodities
PowerShares DB Commodity Index Tracking Fund (DBC)

This portfolio has a drawdown of like 3% in 2008, and like 20% in the Great Depression, so it's really safe. It almost returned as much as the SP500 in the past 10 years as well, so you don't lose much returns.

The concern about this portfolio is the 40% in Long Term Treasuries in a rising interest rate environment, but like I said this portfolio only lost ~3% in 2008 and similar things were happening to rates leading up to the recession.

Over the long term the SP500 will outperform this portfolio, but this portfolio can survive a crash. Ideally if you can lever up this portfolio you can outperform the SP500 on a risk adjusted basis, but issues are that during recessions, you might find it difficult to keep levered up because regulations on the exchanges. Investors like Warren Buffett do similar things where they minimize their portfolio risk and buy investments on margin, but they can't get margin called. Warren Buffett owns GEICO through Berkshire, so he can borrow insurance float and lever up his portfolio by an extra 100-150 billion, without ever being asked to return the money.
