Well you have 2 classes of people, those that are living paycheck to pay check and have just barely enough income to continue to survive, they are trapped in poverty and have no means to climb out, all they can do is attempt to sustain what they have. A friend of mine who is very well spoken and not a dumb guy by any means has held a regular job for the last several years and he literally can't afford $500 to get his car fixed so he's taking the bus and getting rides from me at the moment. There are millions of people in his exact situation that barely have the means to survive and just packing up and hitting the road is a suicide mission. Keep in mind most people don't have credit, especially younger people and even if you do finding an institution that isn't incredibly predatory is become much more difficult.

As for the 2nd group you have people who are legitimately bad with money and/or live their lives to the absolute limit of their financial means. In the US there's over 1.2 Trillion in public auto loan debt, with the average car payment around $500 a month over 68 months. There's a kid I used to hang out with, he was a few years younger than me but he was pretty smart for his age, saw him the other day. I don't know what mom did for work but it didn't bring in much and the kid got most of his stuff from his drug dealer dad or worked side jobs between school to save up. Despite having very little actual money coming in and living just about the poverty line, mommy still drove around in a new Range Rover.

I live in Sydney where the only choice if you are single is to live in a share house with 7 other people. Even on a decent wage (above average, ~$800 a week) won't be enough to afford rent, bills and food. I have had many friends move out and be forced into these places. Things were constantly being stolen, bathrooms were atrocious, mold and bed bugs were common. Nothing was ever fixed by the owners. Very low living standards.

I chose to move back into my parents house after moving out with 2 other friends. I constantly had trouble affording proper food and the depression starts to build when you cannot afford to go out and emergencies such as car repairs meant using credit. It's not a nice way to live.
I really don't like the fact that people are being forced to pickup a second job just to survive.
As of now the only place to live under $350 a week in my area is share accommodation.

Yes, there are personal choices that a lot of people could take to avoid these scenarios but it's becoming increasingly difficult.
