Smart contracts are just way overrated and will probably not see much adoption.
The two big use cases, insurance and derivatives can't even be done with smart contracts in the real world.
Do you think that insurance companies have a 1:1 ratio of capital to covered insurance? No of course not, because they know that only a fraction of all contracts are getting served.
With smart contracts you need to have a 1:1 coverage, because the funds need to sit and wait in that SC in order for it to be trustless.
It's the same thing with derivatives. So banks and insurances will need to 10x or 100x their capital reserves to use smart contracts which will obviously never happen.

Capital won't be sitting on chain, it will be in a bank account that can communicate with a SC platform via chain link. Payouts to insured will happen when chainlink trustlessly delivers event data to an insurance contract. The contract will communicate trustlessly with a bank API to facilitate payment. It's true that reserves will probably need to be a higher % of coverage since the determinism of SC's will allow for less legalese smooth talking to avoid payouts, but it seems absurd that the ratio would approach anywhere near 1:1. Also carriers will bite this bullet because of net savings caused by automation of back end processes.

So the notion of link being worth quadrillions in total is a farce. What isn't a farce is that if you want a derivative that is deterministic and backed by freely instantly auditable on chain assets (including fiat equivalents) you will have one option and it will have to flow through chainlink. So realistically everything will go asymptotically to its real risk/value with some carve out for the time dependency of money. i have a similar feeling about chainlink. even while some of the autists here are wagecucking, if you can see the bigger picture, chainlink has tremendous traction and even more obvious to be a big deal than what ethereum could be in its early stage.

It’s not so much that you think ahead of these people, it’s that you make decisions in a completely different way. Never underestimate the power of social consensus and safety in numbers. Humans have evolved to be social creatures and form a collective consensus. You are judging link on its substance with little regard for how popular it is or who else thinks it’s a good investment. For most people, even very smart people, this kind of fundamental stuff is subordinate to what the group consensus is, what other people like at the moment, etc. It’s why reddit is always so slow to catch up because they make their decisions through upvoting and consensus, by which point everything is already priced in, or worse overvalued. If you wait for the majority to agree that an investment is good then it’s already too late.

To INTJ types, INTP types, autists, these kind of people, they find it difficult to believe that the world could be so fundamentally irrational. But, again, if everyone thought for themselves then we wouldn’t have evolved to co operate as we do and our species wouldn’t be successful. We are social creatures. Everyone diverges from this groupthink mentality to different degrees - the examples above are the least prone to it. Next, perhaps following the announcement of mainstream partnerships, the next wave of slightly more independent-than-average thinkers (but not quite autistic) will buy in. I am an ENFP (slightly F more than T), and I got on Chainlink as soon as I heard about it in September last year. What really drove me was the wisdom of the crowd about how Ethereum needed Chainlink, the Swift and Facebook connections, and more importantly, the possibilities of blockchain technology. I can't believe how someone could read up on blockchains, learn about smart contracts, and NOT want to do everything possible to make it a reality. It solves so many problems in life, from companies defrauding their employees by not paying them their due, to restoring power to people in the creative world by strengthening their IP rights on the songs, and media they create. There's no more exciting time than now and I'm honored to play a role in the 4th industrial revolution.

I find it completely mindboggling how people on here can get lambasted with Link threads on here and still doubt the project after everything we've learned and continue to learn. Just the fact that a start up company has other startup companies formed INDEPENDENTLY around the original company to profit and support the platform should say to you that this project is no joke. But hey, when this takes off and they miss the boat, we have clout in saying that it's not just luck that made us rich. It's having the foresight to recognize the opportunity as they come. Not everyone has it as shown by /biz/'s reaction to Link.
