I don't spend anything on healthcare, I'm uninsured and put everything I have into investments while working out so I don't have health problems. Imagine actually going to the doctor for anything that isn't life threatening. I've made enough from the invested money to cover costs. I'm not sure what you're getting at by saying "why not just give everyone coverage". The people who desperately need it make up a small fraction of our population which is the elderly, people with severe illness, and those with children who can't afford it with their pay. (IE my example before of free surgery because at the time I was destitute). Our system is one where those who can afford to pay do so, and those who can't afford healthcare are covered by government programs. In order for everyone to be covered we would have to have a significant increase in taxes, no?

The money to pay the doctors does not come from nowhere, somebody has to pay. Other countries have a system where everyone pays and everyone benefits. Ours is a system where you can CHOOSE to pay for your own, but in order to cover the most basic issues like the elderly or poor everyone still pays but the amount is small and scales with how much money you make.
