I want to see the crash tests. You might be able to buy it for 40-70k but considering the metal exoskeleton is supposedly bulletproof then I bet it's going to be a pain to fix.

also my laptop/phone battery life has noticeably decreased over time, won’t the same happen to an electric truck getting charged every day?

the only thing that keeps me from picking up a used leaf, 500e, or i3 is the longevity of the batteries.
I drive a 99 camry
it gets about 28 miles to the gallon, has most of the original parts from 1999 and is still driving like the day it was new 20 years later.
now I have to pay for gas, and I change the oil every 5000 miles, and I have to change an air filter and fuel filter every once in awhile but other then that there is no maintenance on the thing.
on the other hand you have a leaf that started at 100 mile range 5 years ago and most can barely do 50 just 5 years later
so now you have to replace the battery pack which is 8 grand. more then what the car was worth then you bought it. so how much money are you really saving?

>> No.16357154

>>16356976
to break it down even more lets do some math
Let's say 10 years of car ownership
used 99 camry according to kbb in mint condition is worth 4 grand.
so let's say we buy that.
$4000 initial cost
now let's say you have a job in town and drive 10 miles each way 5 days a week. it has a 17 gallon tank. at 28 miles a gallon is 476 miles you get out of a tank of gas.
so that means your daily commute on a full tank will last you roughly 24 days. at $2.75 a gallon you're at $46.75 for your commute. now you are going to leave your neet basement too for food we can imagine so let's say another half tank in the month for arrends. so $70 a month for gas.
in 10 years of ownership that comes to $8400 in gas costs assuming the price of gas averages at 2.75 those 10 years.
so far we are at $12,400 for the camry
5000 mile full synthetic oil changes cost about $30 if you diy and with its oil capacity at 3.8 qts with filter you are going to have excess of 1.2 quarts every 5 gallon jug you buy. so every 4th oil change is free except the $5 denso filter you have to buy (you do buy denso right anon)
so you will have roughly at the rate we are going in 10 years ownership you will have 17 oil changes to do. every 4th is free so we get 4 free.
including the 4 filters thats $414 in oil changes
$12,814 we are up to

Cars don't appreciate in value plebs unless they become classic which cant happen because chinks dont build em like that

>> No.16357216

timing job is really a non issue because we are talking about a 5sfe which is a non interface motor. but let's play it safe and do it when we first get the car because it's bound to have at least 75,000 miles on it when you get it. a timing kit with water pump is roughly $150 depending on where you get it from and what brand you get. timing job is easy to do on this motor so we are going to save money and not pay someone. you are going to do this again towards your end of 10 years so $300 plus coolant. Toyota red goes for about $17 a gallon of full strength and you need less than 2 gallons for full capacity. so only one gallon of fs is needed for timing. another $34 for coolant.
$13,148 so far
now let's say alternator and starter and radiator and ac compressor takes a shit in those 10 years.
all which are easy to replace on a 5sfe
starter is 134, alternator is 162, and ac job is about 375 with refrigerant.
$13,819.
tires you'll need to replace every 50k miles or so which run about $600 mounted and balanced. you will need to replace those about twice so $1200
$15,019
now there are tierods and shocks and struts that need to be replaced but I'm leaving those part out because we are nitpicking at this point. let's say with those we land somewhere around $700 for those because I'm starting to get bored doing the math on the camry.
$15,719 cost of owning a camry for 10 years.

now let's look at a Nissan leaf, the most common cheapest electric vehicle you can find
you can pick one up for about $8000 used for a 2015 model roughly.
$8000 initial cost
now used you aren't going to get full bars on the guess o meter. let's say you get one with 3 bars missing out of 12. that's about 70 miles of range in perfect weather conditions. sounds sweet right? no gas to buy and you can go to and from work most of the week on a single charge. rough googleing gives at 11c a kwh the average rate it's about $0.04 a mile. we determined we drive roughly 714 miles a month with a tank and a half of gas. so at 70 mile range you need to charge roughly 10 times in a month is $29. maybe your electric is cheaper or more expensive where you live but there is that. so $3480 in electric costs I. 10 years.
$11,480

>> No.16357390

now the giant elephant in the room with electric cars. the lithium ion battery pack. they barely last 5 years without dropping most of the range. and you got it used so you already lost capacity. in 5 years you are going to 100% have to buy a new one to keep it going. a battery for a leaf is $6000 something you can't install yourself really unless you are an electrician. so let's add the good old dealer fuck you price of labor. it's going to be a grand. $7000 for your new battery
$18,480 already in 10 years and we haven't even gotten into tires and shocks and chassis parts. we are already spending more money jerking ourselves off with an electric vehicle then if we just bought an ice car.
and this is for just a pos leaf. you think the Tesla is going to be cheaper then buying a used f250 for $15,000
electric cars don't make sense right now is the moral of the story. when a battery can last 20 years without being replaced then we can talk about price benefits

Current model 3 batteries are rated for ~400k miles. By the time the Y comes out all parts on the car will be rated for 1 million miles.

I live up north in the cold, people who get electric cars and live in anywhere with cold weather are idiots. The chemistry of lithium ion batteries means that if they freeze they develop crystals that will short the battery and cause fire if you try to charge it, this means that all battery packs have to have built in warmers which will slowly drain your car in the cold even when it is turned off and parked. If it completely runs out of energy and freezes you may have just lost the entire battery pack, when it's -30 here in the winter you lose charge on your battery packs real fast.

This car might be an investment...depending how it turns out. If you’re on the list when they first start to deliver then you might make money flipping it to someone Who really wants one...or the car needs up being just a turd because of the design and holding it for a while might bring you money in the long run, like a delorean or something....either way it’s not the best plan for making extra cash. Cars are not really great as investments.
