Oof... Hey this is a fairly hilarious learning process. I feel a little like only a retard or somebody severely trying to cope would be like ... well you've go to spend money to make money, you've got to have skin in this game, you've got to take risk to get reward, speculate to accumulate etc. But yeah it doesn't feel too bad to be literally losing money.

I have to give it perspective. 60% of my money is in property. 10% managed retirement fund. 10% bonds. 15% cash. 3% ETF's and 2% active trading.

So it isn't the end of the world when SSNS shits the bed because I literally have 500 shares. My total potential losses are $160.

I'm still trying to figure out what sort of style I'm aiming for and if I can even beat an ETF. I just see it as gambling at the moment. I own long hold shit through the ETF's anyway so my active trading might as well be based upon biopharma meme stocks and one in a million moon shots.

I don't think the argument is that the ETF would fail, but rather everyone selling their ETF holdings at the same time would smash the shit out of the underlying stocks in the index.

Also, buying the index as a whole would have been a strategy in the past, but it wouldn't have been the dominating strategy as it is now. Remember, no internet. People would have purchased individual stocks based on word-of-mouth or media shilling.

They have no management taking long or short positions with strategic oversight, they are just algorithm based on an average. If a stock drops out of the index then the fund will drop it and the price will crash further than it needed to. It'll pick up a stock which now replaces it at the bottom of the SNP500 or something and buy that artificially pushing up the price. Things could get really whacky as stocks at the bottom get trashed and those due promotion shoot up pushing legit companies further down the ranking. One concern is that people who bought them as a 'long term set and forget' who previously have been happy to see them climb up month on month, year on year will shit the bed at a legit gap downwards and exit as they approach buy in price potentially rapidly trashing the value of the fund as liquidity suffers compared to the underlying stocks which the fund will have to drop proportions of meaning all kinds of price fuckery.

I imagine there would be some money to be made trying to predict the movements of the big funds. Like if you know a company is about to be dropped you might as well go short, long if it is going to pick one up.

There are funds that are invested in other things like utilities (generally pretty safe and pay dividends), consumer staples (similar attributes to utilities), defense (higher risk, but generally much bigger gains than the broader market), etc. These happen to come to mind as they may offer advantages if there is an economic slowdown.

I don't know how often you contribute to your account, but you should consider putting some of your next contribution into a mutual fund (or ETF if you must), that offers exposure to more specific sectors. There are plenty that are broad enough that you don't need to be worried about trying to actively manage your investment, but may offer advantages over a simple total market index.

Yes. Or they think the stories about fatties getting it together and becoming /fit/ have some sort of quirk that they assume they don't have. The physiology is quite clear on this though; run a caloric deficit and regularly exercise, you will lose weight. Unfortunately they have a devil in their ear in the form of feminists who proclaim that fat is actually just a different form of beauty and they shouldn't feel like they need to change, further that beauty is all subjective anyway and also fuck men.

>overweight smoker
Run a caloric deficit, exercise, switch to vaping (it will become easier to breathe, I know from experience after switching myself).

I've seen this over the last 10 years with friends and people in our social circle. Like your 20's are a lot of cope, big group of mixed people and your 30's people start to deal with their shit or cement behaviour often acting a lot like their upbringing as it comes back around. The absolutely rabid body positive feminist chunks who were still worth poking at 23 are now pretty much super fat, super disabled, super unemployed and are going to turn into those weird people at the bus station who smell like urine and die at 50. A lot of the women I know who were sort of on the fence jumped off the wild ride, got wifed up, had or are having babies and now tend house like it is the 1950's. I don't think any of the not disillusional fat bitches I know now would claim it is a different form of beauty or that it is health at every size. The really bad ones are delusional in wheelchairs, walk with sticks, haven't worked in 3+ years due to mental health problems etc. The rest are trying to lose weight for wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, for fertility reasons etc

Clicking through my watchlist just now and saw something interesting on Dollarama. See, I put notes to myself directly on charts I'm thinking about trading or am currently in position on. Important dates about earnings and spots I want to take profit, spots to exit if the trade fails etc. Anyway, on Dollarama (which I sold last week) I put a big all caps note that says DO NOT REBUY BEFORE EARNINGS. I followed that past advice of course. Come earnings day they miss big league, do a -10% plunge. Thank you past me!

The most important takeaway from MRK is that it broke above a solid resistance at 86.50-87.25 area, retested 86.50 a couple days ago and held it. That's bullish. Look for that old resistance to act as new support in future.

>> No.16472976

>>16472819
Difficult. Ideally you should buy bonds when stocks are sky high and you believe a crash is imminent and buy stocks when the market is rock bottom and you believe a recovery is imminent, but that requires you to be able to predict and time the market which isn't always easy.

Many just buy stocks and bonds and ride it out. Usually more bonds as you get older and less stocks as in theory you have less time to ride out market lows and should be looking for a more reliable return as you get older and greater volatility and anticipated return with compounding when younger.

When I say buy stocks and bonds an ETF is absolutely fine for this. You don't have to buy individual stocks. The fees and the management would be ridiculous compared to the amount invested, especially if accessing markets in other countries.

Active trading, day trading etc to be honest most people lose money doing this. Most people lie about how much they lose and how much they make. I do support a small active portfolio though, especially if you find it fun and interesting though it will potentially be the most risky part of your portfolio.

What I do to (potentially) reduce risk is buy funds which hold stocks linked to other markets. I determined a geographical split at the start and I rebalance this at least twice a year or following major changes. This ensures to some degree I buy low and sell high as I adjust it back to my initial percentages. If you look at returns over the last 10 years usually one market or another out performs the rest.

Except Japan ... I don't know why the fuck 12.5% of my portfolio is in fucking Japan ... fuck those ultimate crab market do nothing stagnating nips in the sideways vagina. All it does it lose value over time and twice a year I buy some more to bring it back up in line. I suppose one day it'll do something insane like 18% return while everything else drops 35%.

Vanguard are really popular and generally have low fees. You can create an account with them and access all that shit from within your online portal.

I don't know what country you are in so I don't know about potential fees, tax implications etc, but here I can stash 20k a year tax free and the returns are tax free.

There are better performing funds than vanguard, but you've got to accept that the funds performance is less about highest return and more about how accurately it tracks the underlying assets. If they all functioned perfectly they would show the same return, the only significant difference is trustworthiness, liquidity and fees.

Decide a split and then look at which funds fit the criteria. Look at the fees especially if you plan to hold for a significant length of time. I'd rather hold a fund with a 0.04% fee than 0.1% even if the returns on the second are a percent or two better one year in three.

Also look at if a fund is partially or fully synthetic. Ideally they aren't. Synthetic funds are a potential risk because they don't own the underlying assets they just act as if they do while doing something else with your money so if SHTF they might not pay out. If everybody sells the company who owns the fund potentially have nothing to sell to recoup and pay out similar to a bank run.

Nothing wrong with socialism to some extent. We are a social species. We have tons of evolutionary adaptations and cultural habits born of survival through what can appear to be altruistic behaviour. If anything we feel good when everybody around us feels good and we are part of something good. We have a tendency towards goodness.

Another thing is that we have socialism to some extent for the capitalist class. We bail out banks, companies, markets. We give tax breaks to wealth (job) creators. We allow ourselves to be heavily manipulated by corporations under the understanding that the more they make, the more we all benefit, but as long as they keep theirs and choose to hand it out. We've this curse of a just, fair and rational world where rewards are clear and easy to understand.

Socialist ... roads? Infrastructure in general fine ... tax me ... do it properly. Health? Fine. Defence? Fine. Education? Fine. I don't care if I pay 60% taxes for good services. Like good ones. I'll pay for quality.

I don't know where you are from, but where I live we have a fairly pedestrian liberal democracy. Compared to America (where I assume you are) it is likely a socialist nightmare. Free healthcare. Childcare. Higher education. Living wage etc. I don't feel the need to move anywhere? What I am arguing is that examples of socialism exist already, can be readily found even in the USA, benefit society, match up with parts of our evolutionary psychology and isn't the boogeyman *most* Americans make it out to be. The one I have here only has an effective leverage of about 30x. Really low but I fucked up cuz I bought it ATM with a 45 day expiration. I was looking and it seems like I could buy Dec 27th SPY calls at 317 for around $100 all in. The Delta is 0.25 giving me an effective leverage of about 75x. The effective leverage would have been 30x rather than the 34x I got with the 313 and I'm not planning on holding til expiration or anything. I'm just going for a quick in and out. How would the 311 make much difference? I mean, obviously it's a tiny bit more likely to work but if I was going for a sure thing I wouldn't be buying options at all. My thoughts regarding options is i want high leverage in a short term trade without the risk of a margin call and with a little time to expiration to give me some wiggle room if needed for the trade to work. >UPDATE 2-Half a million Ebola vaccine doses to be stockpiled for emergency use
>LONDON, Dec 5 (Reuters) - A stockpile of 500,000 doses of Ebola vaccine for emergency use in outbreaks of the deadly fever is being established by the global vaccine alliance GAVI.
>The plan is for poor and middle-income countries to access the $178 stockpile free of charge, GAVI said on Thursday, while other countries will need to refund the costs.
>The stockpiling will start with Merck's newly developed Ervebo vaccine, which won regulatory approval last month.
>GAVI is a public-private partnership backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNICEF and others, which arranges bulk buys to reduce vaccine costs for poor countries.
