Index funds are stocks dummy. An index fund is essentially betting on the health of the entire economy whereas a single stock is betting a single company. A single stock can produce significantly higher returns than an index, but it's also much riskier.

If you read 3-5 stock picking books then picking individual stocks is fine. You still have to diversify to 20-30 stocks.
Otherwise invest in 3-5 index funds, even if you are wealthy.
