Been wanting to invest for a long time and now seems like an opportune moment if you go about it right, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I have a few grand to invest and this coming week I plan to read and learn as much as I can before putting that money down anywhere. However I have some probably stupid questions that I'm hoping someone is willing to answer. For starters, how can I tell what stocks are good to buy? Instinctively I look at a stock's current price and what their peak has been in recent years, and think ask myself is this a company too big to fail (IE industrial military and shit like that). Based on that reasoning I'd want to buy stock that's piss poor because it should be almost guaranteed to shoot back up to those highs, no? That seems too straight forward and I feel like there's probably a cap on how much ti can rebound depending on a lot of factors I'm not considering...

Everyone is expecting the markets to be worse. If we kept open we would have lost more production and more lives and thus more consumption.
Laying people off refults in the ages appearing to go up because the layoffs are concentrated in low pay sectors. Sectors being on hold means that production is still possible because people are staying home and staying safe rather than being out and getting sick and possibly dying. Medical overload has been a lot less than expected. So the system has been able to absorb it all in preparation a lot better than we expected. In this market bad news is good news compared to what the potential effects could be.

The best options are to invest in canadian dividend-yielding stock. They're not as good as american but they're decent. For non-dividend american oil stocks, you're good to go either way and capital gain taxes from selling the stocks will be entirely settled in canada as far as I'm aware.
ZEO has too much canadian oil, but ZJO is 75% USA (but you get to deal with the tax issue)
