Profitable or not it will still exist. It is one of the ways you can launder money and avoid taxes. The value of an art piece is ultimately made up by some art dealer by shilling it on some galleries and paying journalists to write about them so it can be put up in some auction for someone to buy and use as collateral, etc.

This, if you look into it, everyone with even minor success in art has rich parents. You either work in an art mill for "industry wage", have rich parents, or actually become an "art god" a group of about 200 people on the planet. Alternative option is to "work your way up" which is code for spending a career sucking dick and if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person you get cut from the rungs and you won't make it.

Unironically the art field will get better over time. We will need more people who can create stuff. But they'll be "technical artists" people who can make Avatars for VR and the like. 3d printable files, coded environments, etc.
