They sell their technology to industry while bidding and winning US/UK government contracts, including with US DOD. I don't know about any other nations but extremely likely to extend to UK MOD in near future and probably FVEY in longer-term (they are List X and gaining contract experience).
What this means it that these public contracts have huge growth (logistics alone in militaries is a huge market for them) but also as it's technology then the systems they create will become standard for future contract requirements. For anything related to technology with government contracts you have a massive advantage as an incumbent supplier, which means easy extensions and renewals in addition to significant experience to bid for and win future work.

Only for consulting part of the business, in terms of packaged software there's no such issue and that's clearly where they want to grow.

Yeah and their business model is to charge after an initial period because a company will typically adapt their workforce and systems around the product. Makes a lot of sense. It's essentially how public technology contracts work, the supplier does everything cheap intending to try and lock in a single-source environment and then raises price just below the large cost of what it would be to switch.

Any contract with a sovereign entity will usually have at the very least conditions like Termination for Convenience, it doesn't particularly mean much and it's only exceptionally used because it incurs massive public cost.

As far as contract options go that sounds standard then, you'd usually have a contract duration of something like 5 years and then two 1 year option years thereafter.

Firm neggers on working at uni - I only got my degrees as an act of defiance against the family curse, but succumbed at 25 and signed up. Joined the Navy as a pilot, and everything's gone up from there! Salary at the moment is somewhere around £55'000 with all the extra allowances/expenses. UK - Royal Navy. We have 6 months Initial Officer Training, 1 month for RN flying grading on a prop, 3 months (ish) for elementary flying training on a turboprop (the Prefect), and then onto either the Tucano (TP) if you need some more training or directly to the Hawk (jet) if you've done well enough. Couple of years there and onto either the F35 direct or over to the US to have a go on any manner of the airframes they've got over there. I'm coming up to that last stage at the moment, so flying a jet, but not a particularly sexy one yet!

I think the US has it right though - some of our leadership is pretty toxic, and it's all the result of a rush to get pilots to the frontline whilat neglecting all the peripheral skills.

If you're looking for a bit more adventure (rolling around, cold and wet in the mud, being shouted at by angry blokes for minimal pay) there's always the Reserves. Or Diplomatic Service. Thanks, but the only 'holy shit' thing about it is all the extra admin! It is fucking great fun, of course, but equal and opposite and all that. My plan is to stick it out as long as possible as there isn't really anything I could see myself doing other than intelligence stuff down the line. Once I'm out, probably follow my old man's lead and try to go on the circuit - make some money flying old Russian kit for dodgy dictators. I'd love to go commercial and live a comfy life but I don't think I've got it in my blood, sadly. Watched too many Arnie films as a kid!
