I neeted and saved and struggled so when moments like this arrive I would be safe.

We have to pay for more social services
Or we pay for more crime prevention
Or we "pay" by living with more crime around us
Or we "pay" by living in a society where there are more poor and more poverty and more people struggling in that way.

Don't pretend poor people are a poor people's problem.
Being poor is the poor people's problem.
I don't know about you but my life would be arguably better if nothing changed else about my own circumstances other than fewer poor people living on this world.
