TQQQ is more diversified and probably safer. I prefer SOXL since though it is more volatile than TQQQ, I'm extremely bullish on semiconductors in the long term. Also, the underlying SOXX performs better than the underlying QQQ. My idea for getting out of SOXL is when SOXX goes under the 200 day moving average then getting back in when SOXX goes back above. Due to the way leveraged ETFs work, they perform worse when volatility is highest so say SOXX starts dumping and goes under the 200 sma so you get out of SOXL. SOXL might be $300 a share at that point. But volatility is very high so SOXL is getting its clock cleaned. By the time SOXX goes back above the 200 sma, SOXL might be only worth $150 so you've doubled the amount of shares. TQQQ and QQQ don't work quite as well in that respect.

It's admittedly a bit discretionary but based on what I'm seeing, when SOXX goes above the 200 sma it goes above it more than QQQ does and when it goes below, it goes further below it than QQQ does. They both trade very similarly just SOXX swings up and down a bit more. More than anything else I see that trades similar to the overall market indexes like SPY which is kinda what I'm going for. Since it swings down so far, I can make a judgement call and try to get SOXL on a mean reversion trade in addition to everything else I'm doing. I look at the chart and see that about every 2 years when SOXX is under the 200 sma, SOXL will drop more than 50% below the 200 sma and revert every time right after that point. It's like clock work. TQQQ and QQQ and quite as cut and dry, e.g., TQQQ usually doesn't hit the 50% mark. I basically trend trade SOXL based off SOXX and the 200 sma but when the opportunity presents itself I'm ready to go in on a big mean reversion off a good bottom and SOXL hitting that 50% low is so obvious it just jumps off the chart at me. And, again, I'm bullish on semis so there's that.

Yes, you can get cut to shreds but one of those mean reversion buys makes for it all. Also, note the trick to using SOXX to trade SOXL is this: when SOXX drops below the 200 sma it might be at, e.g., $200 and then when it finally gets back above it, the price will still be somewhere around $200. But the volatility is so high it's fuckign SOXL over so while SOXL may have been at $300 when you got out, when you get back in it'll be at $175. That's why you trade SOXL off of the price action of the SOXX underlying. Between that and buying at the 50% drop, you make a lot more than you lose in the chop.

Yeah you're in a tough spot right now. Here's a couple of options to consider. SOXL is a bit more extended than TQQQ presently so maybe buy into TQQQ and set a stop under the current trend line probably around 160 or so. If the stop gets hit and the price turns back around to head up, buy back in around the half way market so $175. If it makes it that far back up after breaking under $160 it was likely a short term correction and is resuming the up trend. Once things get cooking after that and TQQQ hits $220 or something you'll start to relax and can watch SOXX to see if it dips below its 200 sma and try the other thing I was talkign about.
Alternatively, you can just dollar cost average into SOXL or TQQQ a few hundred dollars every week or month or so.
Staying in cash because the price is "too high" are famous last words and the sooner you get past that mind set the better off you'll be. Don't just blindly buy but have a plan of action and execute. Don't just stay in cash since when a market is tearing up it usually keeps doing it for a while. Just my 2 cents
