How to sell a covered call:

If you sell the call you are hoping the stock stays below that price till expiration and it goes to zero.

Say you buy xyz stock for $1 and sell a call at the 1.50 strike price for 25c now you own that stock for 75c but if the most you can make off the stock is the difference between what you own it for and the strike price of the call; in that example 75c.

Now if that call goes out worthless you still own the stock for 75c cost basis though you bought it at 1$ Initially. Now you sell another call in the next month for 25c. You own the stock now for 50c. So on and so forth till you actually own the stock for less than zero or the stock gets called away from you.

If you buy options you can only lose what you paid for them UNLESS you exercise them or they get executed for you (every brokerage I know of automatically excercises in the money options)

Selling naked calls (you don’t own the stock to back it) is the only infinite loss options trade.

Picking up nickles in front of a steamroller is great fun and all except for when the steamroller actually rolls through. Your exposure is always greater with options than with trading stock outright. In reality you would almost never be advised to sell 100 contracts of the same underlying, given that you're betting on a singular condition (that being your prediction of the underlying) for all 100 contracts. Your odds might be better than roulette, but you're still betting it all on black.

Anyway, you do you, just know that a thousand other people are also doing you, and they can also get burned.
