It's a currency like Bitcoin. Its main draw is being exchangeable on uniswap for sketchy but potentially profitable coins that aren't listed anywhere else.

Ethereum is a computing network that powers smart contracts, which will replace regular contracts in all aspects of business and finance, thus disenfranchising the jewish lawyers and bureaucrats that parasitize our society

in the real world, a contract is a piece of paper that says "if Alice does a job, John will give her this amount of money". But people can break the contract, argue over terms after the fact, get held up in court etc.
a smart contract is a digital contract. John puts some collateral money in the contract (this is why Ethereum coins have value). The contract can detect whether alice has done the job, and automatically pay her the money. You cannot break a smart contract once it is initiated.
Smart contracts can replace 50% of the work force of most large corporations.

No that's why you should buy ETH and hold it as its value goes up. Then use a small percentage of that to gamble on stupid shit like GRT.

I just noticed the ETC I've been holding for a few months just went up like 50%
Why? Is this happening? Is it just momentum from a wave of people getting into crypto after the doge stuff? Or is there more going on?

It's a stock on the Bitcoin exchange. Being a subtype of Bitcoin you can buy shares. Also it's unregulated until Elon succeeds in getting the sec to put their foot down.
