It's just a matter of preference. You need to look at the stock too, sometimes they offer dividends to keep investors in because they are in trouble as a company. Other times they are great though. This is a board for people trying to 10x their money off some quick buys so they won't be fans of dividends. I love them personally.

Divvies are fine, but people here want to expand their wealth not subsist on what they already have. Dividends don't beat inflation or even come close to it on their own. Some dividend stocks can skyrocket like growth stocks, so it's not something to ignore, but it is something to not target if you want real gains, moonshot memes or not.

1. No it’s not free money. share price automatically drops the amount the div is paid out per share. This is almost never noticeable based on share price trends anyway.

2. Dividends are taxed at 15% unless you earn less than 39k total (also unless you make over 450K). This is true even if they’re reinvested.

3. While it doesn’t take much to start earning dividends, it takes a lot of time to get it to compound to meaningful numbers.

It’s a low risk, med reward strategy but it definitely should be coupled with a growth portfolio.

O, WPC and the SPG is really good if it makes it through. I wait for a dip with them and buy if it happens. I am no longer doing it but when the crash happened I bought up REITS and their dividends were great because they were so cheap, I sold when the first vaccine news didn't bring about a recovery though because they went way up and I wasn't sure what was going to happen after. I am long term on a REIT called SNR because they immediately cut their losses when COVID hit. i really like them, but enter all REITS at your own risk. I am not an expert at all and real estate is very hard to gauge these days. Bank stocks are also good for dividends, but the same rules apply right now. Banks are getting rocked with crypto and all the weird action going on with the Fed.

I actually don't like Blue Chip stocks with dividends because their price usually doesn't balance out with the 1 percent dividend they offer unless you are rich.

At this point I'm all in tech because it's the only thing that seems to be Covid proof. I even avoid green energy because it's too speculative.

I'm also an amateur so you know, make sure you really do your research because I might be cleaned out on market open today lol.

tl;dr: I like REITs but they are risky plays.

The are THE best way to make passive income. You buy shares in a company an their workers work to earn you money. Doesn’t get much more passive than that.

When you receive dividends, the price of the stock is adjusted accordingly. For example if you get a 0.5 divvie on a $50 stock, the stock opens at 49.5 the next day. Usually companies either rely on growth or dividend to attract investors. Those that rely on dividends do so because they can't feasibly grow anymore (think KO, they have near 100% market share; or think utilities like oil and gas, whose growth is purely dependent on increased populations because everyone MUST already use them). Therefore, they divvy-max, which means they ensure that the drop in stock price takes approximately exactly the time between 2 payouts to recover. As a result, the company slowly crabs in one of the 3 directions while paying the dividend.
This would be fine if the dividend was any good (i.e. comparable to growth companies), but it's not. You're looking at 5% for so-called high yield when the pre-corona inflation is 2% (yearly on both), and that doesn't compound properly (you can either DRIP which means using the divvy to buy more shares, which in turn generates more dividend, but that brings your payout ratio back toward the mean, so you don't benefit from increased dividend payouts for more than a few pay periods in practice, therefore the compounding is minimal in practice; or you can keep the dividend as cash, which means you don't compound at all).
Meanwhile, the CAGR of SPY (s&p500 index) is 7-9%, and that of QQQ (nasdaq100 index) is 9-12%.
It's easy to see that dividends are useless: they are a trap to trick you into staying poor.

To make matters worse, when a dip happens in the market, dividend stocks are NOT safe. Actually they tend to lose even MORE value than normal stocks (you might expect dividend stocks to go down 50% when the greater market dips only 20%).
