A lot of people discuss investing in miners. I have some, myself though admittedly not as much as I think I should.

No, because like any company it depends on their production. Having physical silver is betting the price of physical silver. Mining companies can go up and down depending on their own output/production/projects. It's more room for growth, but equally more room for dips. Of course miners go up and down with silver, but they can crumble overnight if they hit hard times, whereas rocks are rocks.

Ron Paul wanted to make sure it was possible to use them as legal tender so that you could legally transact with precious metals. Having face value also makes transporting large quantities of Silver Bullion internationally a lot easier, since they you report them for their face value and ignore their metal content. The $1 amount is completely arbitrary, about 1/6 the price of Silver at the time the coin was first issued.

The Bunker Hill project is one I am watching closely. The region is known as Idaho's Silver Valley. It holds some of the US's largest silver lead zinc deposits and has had mining going for the last 129 years continuously. Currently the only operator in the area is Hecla operating out of Lucky Friday up the road from Kelloog. The Bunker Hill mine has been moth balled since the late 90s when the original onsite smelter and electrolytic zinc plant were demolished. The modern company hopes for a quick restart in mining in the Bunker hill complex using a mix of modern and existing data from the 1970s. I believe its a solid plan and project, however it does have major problems to work on, like modernizing the moth balled underground mine, mill and other on site infrastructure. The project has the backing of the local community as well, which is good seeing as its smack dab in the middle of a major town. Over all I like the project.

You'd be turning a widely recognized, marked unit of copper bullion with legal tender value which you can readily transact with (at both spot and face value) into an impure, unmarked copper ingot which nobody will buy. By the time the dollar dies and all the coins are demonetized people will be pulling the copper out of buildings and bartering with it, you'd be at a significant disadvantage to them with a dubiously legal 95% pure ingot whereas having copper pennies will put you at an advantage since they don't need to be weighed or assayed like scrap or ingots.
