showing the accounts doesn't matter. the funds don't leave the device unless you sign the transactions with the ledger.

The secret key is what allows someone to access your coins and it isn't displayed, also it doesn't automatically connect you have to enter your pin on the device to display your accounts

so a pin is the only thing literally keeping people out? Then why the fuck have the 24 pass phrase? I thought this was how you actually access it.

So in theory, if someone wrenched me and took my ledger, they'd see all the money, but be unable to access it without the pin?

Yes, if someone wrenched you and took your ledger and forced the pin number out of you, they could steal your shit. Your pin only allows hardware access however, and nobody online can ever steal your coins unless they get your passphrase.

The 24 word thing is seed phrase, and all of your private keys for all of your crypto in your wallet can be derived from it, even without physical access to the device.

>> No.29103061

if you just want a cold wallet, you don't need a ledger

the whole point is that you CAN connect it to a computer to sign transactions while effectively using your wallet but keeping the private key cold

Yes, but no matter how you store your coins if someone has physical access to your devices they can steal them. Hardware wallets are meant to prevent online based attacks, which software wallets do not do effectively.

just use a USB key and encrypt your keys with a passphrase yourself. you can store in a text file. on the other hand, you won't have this faggy crypto "hardwallet" and maybe that's the real point for you

because once you decrypt that USB drive, your keys are exposed to the computer. A hardware wallet signs the transaction on the device itself, then transfers the signed transaction to your computer.

you don't type in your seed during the hardware wallet setup. Its literally the entire point. Its stored in a notepad offline at your grandma's house and then you use your hardware wallet to sign transactions. You could literally steal my computer and my ledger and I would be fine

The pin is to keep out the person who has stolen your ledger from spending your coins.

The pass phrase is to stop any cunt anywhere in the world at any moment from cloning your wallet. Because its the actual seed that access to your entire wallet is generated from.

If you lose your ledger you can buy a new one and access your funds with the words passphrase, regenerating the private key to your funds.
