I got into the apps a few years ago when depressed and bored, because it seemed like the golden age of collecting cards when it wasn't about they money, just the joy. Quickly I saw even back then people were selling them and that was driving all the insane prices they started charging and the free cards became way less relevant.

I just said fuck it and got back into real trading card trading.

I invested about 1000 in Michael Porter Jr. cards, and now those are worth about 15000, and he isn't even an all-star player. The return is already better than if I bought bitcoin at the time, and could easily see another 10x this year if he emerges as a "Big 3" player in Denver.

Luckily, they usually leave completely undesirable players out of the cards completely.

Any card of an all-star player will sell. But in any given year, the most popular and desirable cards are the rookies.

It also depends on things like the position they play, and the market they are in.

Yes. It's important to note that the rookie premium has increased a lot the last few years. I was buying in Jayson Tatum's rookie year mostly, comparatively it's at least 3x as expensive to invest in Lamelo as it was Tatum.

Also the economics of "pulling" cards from packs is never good. It's long shot gambling, at best.

You make real money by buying cards and selling them at a higher price later.

Also, I am mostly experienced with actual physical cards, I bought like one pack of topshot, I don't have time for that, right now, as it's more geared towards people that do have a lot of time, I barely have time to deal with all the cards I have worth more than $100 (probably 4-500), and top shot isn't worth the time it takes.

I also don't like digital cards as much because a key component of physical card collecting is the condition of the card, that really helps drive prices because a pristine version of a card is so much rarer.

I have a plan that I'll share because probably no one is really listening or watching, but I have a small chunk set aside, and when the initial demand starts to wear down and prices dip I am going to check out what is available.

With digital stuff, because of the reason I stated above, I believe only things that are actually unique will hold value. I don't care about having a Top Shot moment 2000 other people have it. That's the same kind of bullshit nhl skate and mlb bunt did and those cards aren't worth shit outside of a few.
