Hey OP. Colombian here. Listen to me, if you wanna go cheapmaxx Colombia is a good place, just don't go into where the poors are and you will be good. Brazil as other anons suggested is a better choice in terms of quality of living (specially the south, think of it as Europe lite without as zogged/kiked) however it is more expensive. My advice is, if you choose Colombia, move into a small city (Manizales, Pereira, Tolima). Those are chill and are much less expensive than the bigger cities. So long as you keep a low profile (which you should if you are going to be frugal anyways) I think it would work out. Good luck

I am a European currently living in South America for business reasons and there are many reasons not to go here unless you have a very good reason to:
1.- It's not really much cheaper. You will realize that you are not really saving all that much money if you want to have a European quality of life.
2.- The people are hell to live with. South Americans have this stereotype of being easygoing and open, this is true in the sense that if you go to a party or meet friends of friends, but in general people are really unpolite and actively hope the worst happens to you. This is different from western Europe where simply nobody gives a shit about you, but they don't actively hope something bad happens to you.
3.- You have to be careful of crime. Not going out alone at night, don't go to certain places etc. You can't carry a gun and even if you could it would be moronic, since if you would defend yourself you would either get shot, arrested by the police, or get retaliated by the criminals family/gang. If you are a victim of crime you just have to accept it and move on.
4.-Just the sheer inaptitude of the general population. Want to get something fixed in your house? Good luck finding a plumber etc. that actually knows what the fuck they're doing. I had it multiple times happen that I hired someone to fix something, they come and do fuck all or fuck something up and then fight me and refuse to leave if I don't want to pay for their idiocracy. This happens EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME, the general population is incompetent and you can't expect anyone to do their job correct, unless you know them already. To avoid this I do all plumbing/electrics/etc. myself. You have to minimize exposure to these idiots as much as possible.
5.- Administrative work is hell on earth. The public workers know nothing about their work or the laws that apply. They are idiots that don't do anything and will tell you that any problem you have is normal because that's just the way it is.
