Become a squatter. If you do it long enough you can claim the property as your own. It's probably your only chance to get a zestimate.

It's not quite that simple.

>In all 50 states, in order to qualify for adverse possession laws, a squatter has to undergo litigation with the court to claim legal ownership over the vacant property and they must prove that they were on that piece of property for the statutory period during which time it was their main place of residence. They also have to claim that they have a deed to the property or that they paid property taxes for a specific length of time.

Have fun.

You have to pay the property tax though. This would only work for extremely negligent owners (estates of dead people in limbo, defunct real estate companies, very rich and careless investors, etc). And at that point, if you are inhabiting and improving an otherwise abandoned property, you are doing a public good, and sort of deserve it anyways.

Depends on the state, for some with longer durations, like 10-20 years, you don't need any deed or property taxes at all. For the ones with deeds, you can easily forge a fake, and for ones with property taxes, it is publicly accessible for anyone to pay a parcel's taxes, regardless of ownership.

>> No.50036828

>>50036630
You can pay taxes in lieu of the actual owner not paying taxes. If the owner is paying taxes, or paid any taxes in the state during the time period that state allows, you won't win a claim in court.
The burden of proof in all states is on the squatter to prove that you either have a valid claim, like a deed, or that the property is abandoned - and some courts may require notice to the last listed owner of the property that ownership is being disputed.
It's not impossible, but unlikely to get a perfect storm of all factors to pull this off, and the second the actual owner enters the picture, you're done. You might find a crumbling house in the worst Detroit suburbs that was abandoned by an owner. But then if you do claim it successfully, you're on the hook for all of the unpaid back taxes, and liens on the property.

Like I said, it's not quite that easy. Good luck.

Please videotape yourself going into a court and presenting a fake deed, when that court has access to the records for the property.
I could use a good laugh.

As for the taxes, sure, anyone can pay, but if the actual owner/estate/corporation is paying them, there will be questions - and you lose your claim.

It varies from state to state. FL for example requires you to make a visible improvement, pay taxes, get mail delivered there and not hide the fact you're living there.

It's essentially designed in a way m that if you stumble upon an abandoned house before the state of a bank does, you're free to take it over as long as you pay uncle sam his.

In many states, a forged deed can be sufficient for "color of title". https://scholarship.kentlaw.iit.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1909&context=cklawreview

By definition, adverse possession that requires "deeds" can never occur when you already have the correct government-approved documentation. In that scenario, you already own the property and there is nothing to gain "possession to". The law therefore concerns failed/insufficient documents, which may lead a trespasser to believe they own the property.

>The court literally has access to the databases. Do you really think they'll take your word for it?
The point of adverse possession law is when you don't own the property, but the court decides you deserve to have it anyways. In the states that require "deeds", it refers to a good-faith argument from the trespasser that they think they bought the property, even though they didn't. Look up "color of title".

In any case, you have to have uninterrupted use of the land for at least 5 years in all states, so this can only be attempted on seriously abandoned properties.

Well, to do it right you still need to invest about $5,000:
>Get new locks on all the doors, make sure the house is secure
>Get all the utilities turned on and working properly
>Buy video cameras and security system
>Lock all your valuables in a safe
>Find out from the town who owns the house. If it’s a Bank, they’ll kick you out eventually. If it was a dead person, you’re likely in the clear
>Find a law firm to represent you in case you need it.

kek, so easy to judge and make assumptions anon.....tsk tsk, your ignorance is folly. In my state it's only 7 years and the laws were recently updated *in favor* of squatters/those perpetuating adverse possession. One can make "improvements" to the value of of the property up to 50K a year - and if the true owner ever comes back and claims you are squatting....guess who has to foot the bill for your improvements before a court will order you to be removed? Oh btw the actual owner will have to pay back all the back taxes (plus interest) that you have paid while squatting on the property before a court will order you to be removed. Guess what happens if they can't pay? Automatic ending of the adverse possession period and you are granted the deed. In liberal west coast states renters have more rights than the owner, what makes you think this wouldn't apply to squatters as well?
>inb4 muh larp
Wanna know a secret anons? Every county has an annual tax parcel auction for every property that is delinquent 4-5 years in property taxes. The owner has up until the day of the auction to pay back at least 1 year to be removed from the auction list. Lots of folks are years behind and pay only 1 lagging year to keep their property from being seized by the state and sold to the highest bidder. The lists are often updated the day of or night before the auction to reflect who has paid their taxes. Go to an auction they're kind of fun desu even if you don't bid. The most boomer shit you've ever seen. Here's the best kicker about property taxes in the modern day and age.....you can fucking pay them online. You do a little research, find a property that could work for you, and then pay 1 year before auction and begin squatting. It really isn't that hard, you just need to DYOR like anything else in life. Of course if you shoot big you can end up in trouble.....if there are liens on the property as another anon mentioned you will be liable for those too.

Yeah this is the smart way to do it. I have thought about this before as well, the only issues being potentially trespassing charges on my criminal record, and not having the time/career freedom to move to a state with favorable adverse possession laws.
