Negative-yield bonds already exist to prop up mutual funds. Who's to say the Treasury won't start trying to sell these?

Yes. Bonds are already effectively negative as the rates are purposely lagging inflation.

Defaulting is worse than trying to pay the debt off over a few generations and just printing the money so i would guess the likelihood is effectively 0%.
