Why doesn't everyone live in the midwest? moved back after living on the west coast for 15 years, and its better in every way. Cheaper, nicer people, 4 seasons.
In minneapolis, you can get a pretty nice place for 1500 a month in a gentrified area or even downtown. even cheaper in st paul. As a server (the highest paying no skill job you can get if you work somewhere halfway decent) you make $15 plus tips. Serving drinks/food will net you 30+ /hr easily at the right place. I don't see how everyone is always so poor and struggling to get by. Add two people in the equation, and you have absolutely no problem getting by and starting a family. i dont understand how everyone is so poor.

I’m 37 and have been living with my folks since Covid. They’re not well mentally or physically, and I take care of them, cook and clean and stop them from killing each other. I realized early on that I was taking on a thankless job that no one would appreciate, but recently they’ve been attacking me and doing little things to sabotage me. I can sacrifice a portion of my life and career to ensure my parents have a good end of life experience, but I won’t be treated poorly. I bought a house cheap as hell, 3 beds, basement,garage. Pay only 400 a month. Years pass. My salary goes up and up. He didn't have to let anyone live there to be honest but I think he was bored as hell plus he didn't want to do all the upkeep work by himself either. Hey worked out good for me. I got a cheap place to live, got to spend time outdoors and got to hang out with my friends for a few more years. I only owe money on one of my houses. I Bought my first house when I was 18 years old in 2011 after the housing crash.

I bought it for $30k because you could pick up a shitty fixer upper for that much back then.

I replaced the floor boards, I went under the craw space and ran new plumbing, I retired the bathroom and kitchen, I bought a new furnace for it, I replaced the windows...I could go on.

I lived with my parents and used that first house as a rental property. Back then I worked at home depot as my day job. Now I'm a mechanical Engineer, with three rental properties and still living with my mom and dad.

when you are the one paying the bills and caring for them, instead of the other way around, usually that's when parents are in their 70's, they don't need you finantially, but they start depending on you for help around the house, that's if you don't just intern them into a nursing home, here in my country we take care of our elderly, unless none of the children can take care of them, in that case they are interned if they can afford it, or just live alone until they die, usually from old age, but also from stupid accidents. my elderly neighboor lived alone into her 80's and once she fell and was on the ground for a whole day with a hose of water pouring on her until her daughter found her shivering with cold. imagine if she wasn't visited

Personally I don’t see any problem at all if you’re putting in money to pay bills, buy groceries and other shit the house needs, etc. Thats less financial burden on the family since their children will now be forking some dough over to handle house affairs and the children don’t have to fork over thousands every month just to inhabit some shitty apartment from a face that only comes around to be a pain in the ass. Doing so also gives said children ample time and breathing room to save a shitton of money whether they work an actual career or basic wagie job to have an opportunity to actually get their own real estate and not risk getting completely fucked. Even if your family is shit it still makes infinitely more sense to collaborate together unless you have a once in a lifetime opportunity you cannot possibly miss, and the only reason IMO this fell out of vogue for a few decades is because landlords needed more wagies. Thing is like many other things in society today the pyramid scheme is collapsing because the ones at the top kept grabbing for more and more. So now boomers can kvetch to the nursing nome all they want, shit is changing everywhere including the moving out meme.

i hate my immediate family, they are financially retarded and would suck me down. they're lazy, give in to instant gratification spending with no long term thinking, then complain about the resulting lack of money. my brother is 34 and has no credit card. his wages are garnished because he did not pay back his loan for culinary school. for a while he was doing paycheck cashing services.

there's literally no amount of money that would make me go back to living in that kind of environment for longer than 24 hours. i envy people with parents and immediate family they can get along with, to the point they live comfortably under the same roof to save up for a mortgage down payment. that concept is totally foreign to me.
