doesn't happen in companies where the main product is either software or contracted developer time, which are where all the top developers are anyways. what you're describing are industries that use software to do their day-to-day business, and the software is more of a cost center instead of producing profit for the company.

Eat light bfast at 6:30
Take a shower around 7

Head in to work around 7:45 to 8.
Work my 8 hours, get offered OT. Take it or not depending on my mood.
Work usually consists of residential plumbing so spend most my day driving around with an hour or two at each house- mind you I've been getting paid since 8.
Go home, have dinner waiting (I make enough the wife stays home)
Family sites at table and eats dinner.
Afterwards my kid and I usually boot up Dark Souls 1 and we spend 20 minutes or so making funny looking characters.
By now it's around 8. Book and bath time for the kids.
After bath one more book. Tuck them in.
Then the wife and I either fuck, or watch a movie together while she's tells me about her day.
That's pretty much the routine. Nice and comfy.
Keep in mind that's only during the winter since I don't work in the summer. Summer time there is too much to do at the homestead between planting and the animals to bother with working.
Only a couple trades I know do genuine hard labor, and most those guys enjoy it. The ones that hate it generally don't last too long.

I do sheet metal work, like soffit/cladding/fascia/capflashing/downpipes/etc on commercial buildings (lately I've been doing work on lots of major grocery stores in my city). Sometimes I do small roof repair jobs because I can also do flatroofing stuff like torching and tpo welding, and my company doesn't have to send more guys out then, but generally that will just be easy shit like sealing around a scupper or patching holes left by mechanical guys or my roof anchor.

It's pretty chill, I like my job, it's definitely not anywhere close to as demanding as roofing and I get paid fairly decently ($35/hr, foreman rates are $40-45 at my company but I'm not a foreman). Idk if I'd want to be another trade, if anything I want to eventually get off the tools. But even still, half my days are just driving around measuring stuff to be fabricated so I really can't complain (I don't do fabrication, although I do know how to break sheet metal into stuff like siding and flashing at this company)

Basically as long as my work looks good and nobody complains, I don't get any shit for how long it takes, or how many hours are marked down, and we have no direct supervision.
