I would get a few coin reference books, there is Australia specific ones, A few test kits and depending on your budget a Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier.

If your looking to become a trader in the event of a collapse, you should have all the above at your disposal and a wide array of odd coins as a weight/feel/sound/visual reference.

With that in mind, exchanging fiat for any pm coin in regards to your end goal is a part of the plan. The peniwise silver eagle isn't really a trinket then. It's an investment in A- silver content and B- your knowledge base.

You want to expand your knowledge as much as you can to protect yourself.

Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of fakes: coins that are pretending to be something rare with numismatic value but are really not; and coins that are pretending to be made of some specific amount of a PM but are not. If your concern is the first, a reference collection might be the answer, but I am CERTAIN that the numismatic folks (of which there are many) have gone on at length about how to avoid fakes of the numismatic type. Listen to them. As for the second type, fake bullion content, you would be better off spending the money you were going to spend on the reference collection on a sigma machine.

You'd probably enjoy something like a silver Tetradrachm of Alexander the great, generally 16-17 grams each so they're chunky and appealing. Lots of ancient coins are surprisingly small which will catch you off guard if not used to ancients. Many Alexander tetradrachms were minted so they're widely available and affordable, often under $200 if you shop around. If you want a Roman coin I recommend a big chunky brass sestertius like pic, they're 20+ grams and more impressive to hold than a dime sized denarius

Precious metals are cheap right now, and they will stay cheap for some time. The trouble with buying low and selling high is, of course, the buying low part. So precious metals don't pay you dividends or interest to hold them, which seems to be why so many people think they're irrelevant. Because of this, the only time the price matters to you is when you trade/sell them. If we understand that the market is rigged, and that rigging will end some day, then it would be foolish to ever trade your hard money for govt paper while the manipulation is still on.
Am I making sense? I'm not going to sell a single ounce until silver is at least $125 (in todays dollars). I may check the price now and again when I'm ready to acoooomulate more, but nobody should be checking it five times a day, like "did it moon yet? did it moon yet?"
Just take care of yourself, accumulate when you're able to do so, and stop checking the price so often if it's affecting you this badly. You'll know when it's time, the whole world will be talking about it.
