BlockFi was not openly advertising shorting the tokens at that time.
The Chainlink team used Celsius for their ETH and BTC treasury which made it seem safe.
DeFi offered opportunities to generate yield, but due to taxation issues using it create taxable events because of the token swaps even for things like depositing a token on Aave and getting an aToken or to curve.

Using a CeFi who would use this strategy was a way to workaround this tax issue by virtually not swapping the token with DeFi and still getting a return.

The shorting was mainly attributed to Nexo, but BlockFi and others lent them LINK.
The irony in this is that it was easier to recognize the CeFi issues and withdraw before getting HODL mode from Celsius or others than leaving Bancor.
