From a technical perspective it’s not possible, not easily at least. It requires all AAA developers to come together to outline a spec that would define NFT rendering across various contexts. And then this spec would have have to be implemented across game engines and there is nothing stopping devs from deviating from the spec in implementation.

Even if it was possible the GME marketplace would make 0 sense. The whole point of NFT/crypto is that it removes the need for middlemen since the blockchain is the source of truth. Things like OpenSea make sense for indie artists but for game studios it’s trivial to develop their own marketplaces in an NFT world. There would need to be an all-in-one opensource game engine, where any type of game could be built on it so every developer is using it whether they are indie or AAA. I dont know how far off that is though because they usually optimize their game engines for the types of games being built upon them, I dont know if an allinone approach is feasible in the near future.

I personally think it will be much easier for AAA companies to outsource their NFTs to immutable/gamestop than do everything in house for themselves, which is just one reason to be super bullish on gamestop getting there before anyone else. As Immutable has said they are making it a cakewalk for game studios to turn assets into NFTs to the point that for both development/consumer, its like the NFT portion isn't even there and there's no hurdles to jump over that have been a part of the crypto space before. Only it is there and giving you true ownership.

One thing that would be interesting however is something like an "unreal engine hub world" where any NFT skin along with its animations would be able to be used by you as an avatar, for whatever hub world whoever makes in unreal engine. Thats the easy part.

Slightly harder but still possible would be "unreal showdown" where (IDK if these are all made in unreal engine but for the sake of the example lets say they are) you have your doom marine NFT as a playable character fighting against some call of duty hero, fighting against some spartab from halo someone owns all in an arena shooter like super smash bros. Someone will have to program a balance of rules between how all the games operate, but its entirely possible since its all on the same engine. Multiple different game engines could have the same thing.

I was thinking less as development and more a licensing loophole. Instead of Epic or w/e providing the textures and having them packaged with the game, it becomes divorced from the game. The user uploads their texture to the game whenever there is a match, that data is pulled only for that match. The NFT provides the auth needed to allow the texture to be uploaded.
