My grandad was a millionaire but our extended family screwed us out of all of his money.
My dad had a successful run in business but almost lost everything twice.
I paid my own way in college (comsci) and scored a FAGMAN internship.
My wife was poor when we married but she had a few bits of good luck in her career.
My dad loaned me $15k to put a down payment on my first apartment that at the time was $200k and I sold 5 years later for $500k.

This. I've been with my girl for 15+ years. We started with 0 and have done nothing exceptional except for supporting each other and just generally having each other's backs. We've been through some seriously dark times together. I couldn't imagine facing some of that stuff on my own. We've grinded away for years whilst remaining open to the various opportunities life tends to offer to the engaged and receptive individual. For a long time she made more money than me, but I eventually found my feet so now she can work part time while I bring home a nice salary.
We signed off on a small mortgage, luckily just before covid hit, and now we're living an extremely easy life. We grow our own weed, we don't drink booze, and we don't have any debts outside of the mortgage and a couple of subscriptions so we are stacking money without really trying and getting to do/buy what we want when we want.
No plans for children, we've both got too many mental problems that would be extremely unfair to pass on. We are both pretty heavy on the ADHD/Sperg spectrum.
I 100% could not have achieved my current quality of life without her.

My parents owned a house 40 years ago, and owned it outright in 1995

Then in 2000 they decided to knock it down, and a build a McMansion, which they spent way more than they could afford building.

So eventually they got foreclosed on due to taking on way more than they could afford to buy.

My parents still refuse to admit they're financially illiterate and that the banks loaned them way more than they could actually afford and their excuse is "WELL WE DIDNT KNOW, ITS THE BANKS JOB TO TELL US IF WE CANT AFFORD IT"

Now theyre rent cucks in their 60s despite having owned a house with no mortgage 25+ years ago LOL

Expecting something from your parents/grandparents for something after they kick is pretty Jewish to me. You shouldn’t be worried about what people do with their wealth after they die but rather focus on building your own, unless firearms are involved . My mom said as I turned 14 that there was no college fund and that I "had to have a plan" after high school. Fast forward, I'm 22 and she announced that she bought an 8-unit apartment building in the ghetto and put $100k down and secured a crazy high loan. 100 fucking k. And I was forced to overhaul every unit under threat of not being allowed to eat.
She lost that building eventually. Every time one of her welfare nogs moved in, they destroyed the unit, and i had to renovate it. Then the roaches came. The roaches were so bad that the building was condemned. She had to walk away from it, and the city eventually tore it down. Just empty land now.
I got a CS degree at age 32. I had to go the long way in life, but I made it. She said that I appreciate my degree more than if i got it in my early 20s with her financial assistance.

Dude has no retirement savings because he spends all his money on booze. Meanwhile my mom had to spend all of her retirement on legal fees because my brother went to jail 3 different times between 2007-2011 on top of getting several MIP’s and PI’s. Oh, and he also failed out of college, so she had to co-sign a variable interest rate loan so he could pay for his final semester because he was already at 6 years with 30 hours left before graduating with a fucking BA in mass comm. he is currently unemployed at 35 and living with his girlfriend.

Meanwhile I busted my ass to get into a good school and graduated with a BS in MIS and now have a great job with the government doing says admin. Unfortunately my mom will never retire because she insisted on paying for my college because “I was the only kid who was going to make it”. That woman is going to work until she dies, and the worst part is my brother and father treat her like crap, and both will go their separate ways when she dies. I’ll never see them again.

The only good part is my mom told me in secret that she left everything to me in her will. I get the house, cars, jewelry, everything is mine when she dies. Still sucks though. Believe me anon, I have offered to take care of her many times. She always turns me down every time. The woman is too proud to admit that she needs someone to take care of her. I tell her all the time she should sell the house, pay off her debts, kick my dad out and come live with me. But she always says she doesn’t want to be a burden and wouldn’t want to live with a young bachelor. It sucks man. Part of me wonders if she has already given up and is just waiting to die. I’ve told her that her only other option is living in a nursing home because my brother told her to her face he will put her in a nursing home with no regrets.

It's a stalemate
>you would do anything for her if she asks you to
>she would never ask you because a "good mom" is supposed to suffer and die while you thrive and live on
Sucks. Those are big life decisions, I'd start small, take her somewhere nice, offer to get the smallest debt payment for her, if not that, then some groceries, ease her into this. Talking out of my ass

My parents also got foreclosed on but unlike yours they never got to own a place.
The mental gymnastics is astounding, they literally blame the bank because other people who got foreclosed on they knew got to either walk away with no debt afterwards or got to stay in their house.
Of course what they fail to realize is those people are lying about their true situation. And the bank isn’t there to help you, you’re making a deal with the devil for your soul don’t expect them to let you in on what all the clauses in the contract mean.

Why don't you people just buy an apartment or condo? I live in a nice one, bought it at 24 years old.

Never once rented in my life, but stayed with my parents "longer then usual" to save up.

I don't get why you need to buy a house unless you're married and have kids - which most of us aren't.

Thanks anon. It’s hard to live through watching her grow old and die miserable. I do my best to visit her often and make her happy but even after a while, she tells me that “you visit me too much anon. You should be out living life instead of babysitting an old lady like me”. She gave everything up for me, and I feel such a huge pressure to live up to her expectations. I can never fully repay her for what she did.

Because the condo association will either fail to properly budget for building maintenance or spend the association fees on frivolous shit that you don't want, jacking up your monthly dues.

People want to own detached homes because they want control, both financially and creatively.

Wait, decorating I understand, if so move with the decorations when leaving.

But renovating the home? Unless there is some sort of agreement with the owner how was she even allowed to do this? An agreement of this kind would probably deduct investments from the rental and ensure the contract remains locked for a minimum fixed amount of time.

What sort of priorities are these?
